West Oahu CaneFires News Release

West Oahu took advantage of nine walks and pounded out 10 hits en route to an 8-1 victory over Honolulu tonight at Honolulu's Les Murakami Stadium.

The CaneFires (5-2) sent 11 hitters to the plate in the first inning and jumped out of the blocks with six runs. The outburst included a three-run home run to center field from right fielder Caleb Gindl, and led to an early exit for Sharks starter Michael Broadway (0-1) who allowed all six runs on five hits and three walks.

Greg Burns, Cyle Hankerd, Brian Friday and Miles Durham each chipped in two base hits in support of West Oahu, the current leader in Hawaii Winter Baseball's West Division.

CaneFires starter Kyle Bloom (1-0) allowed a run on one hit and struck out three through five innings. Relievers Andrew Hess and Fumikazu Kimura combined to shut out the Sharks through the game's final four frames.

Honolulu (4-2-1) managed five base hits including a double off the bat of designated hitter Jordan Abruzzo. Catcher Tony Cruz improved his batting average to .462 with a single, and notched an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

The squads return to Les Murakami Stadium tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the rubber match of the three-game series.
