Weekly Update: Rapids Host Whitecaps FC on Wednesday

RAPIDS HOST VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC ON WEDNESDAY: On the heels of a 3-0 win against the Portland Timbers on Saturday, highlighted by goals from Conor Casey and Jamie Smith, the Colorado Rapids face Vancouver Whitecaps FC this Wednesday, July 4 at 7:30 p.m. MT at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. This is the second meeting between the two Western Conference teams this season; the Rapids fell 1-0 in Vancouver on June 16, and they'll play each other once more on September 23. The match, presented by HealthONE, is part of the 17th Annual 4thFest presented by Westerra Credit Union to celebrate Independence Day. WESTERRA CREDIT UNION PRESENTS 17th ANNUAL 4thFEST THIS WEDENSDAY: On Wednesday, July 4, the Colorado Rapids will host the 17th Annual 4thFest, presented by Westerra Credit Union, at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The festival begins outside the stadium at 5:00 p.m., and features activities for adults and children including a live performance by That Eighties Band, karaoke, the Salida Circus, a zip line, arts and crafts, and more. The Rapids face Vancouver Whitecaps FC at 7:30 p.m., presented by HealthONE, and then immediately following the match ticketed fans are invited to sit on the pitch to watch the state's largest display of fireworks. UNDER-18 TEAM TO COMPETE IN U.S. SOCCER DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY FINALS WEEK: The Colorado Rapids Under-18 Team became one of eight teams across the country to qualify for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Finals Week, held July 16-23 in Houston Texas. They won their group in Development Academy Playoffs in Dallas with a 2-1-0 record, led by Dillon Serna who scored twice in the first match, as well as the stoppage time game-winner in the third match to win the group and send the team to Finals Week. Shane O'Neill, who signed with the Colorado Rapids first team on June 19, also contributed a goal in the first match. The team will train at home for the next two weeks, and then head to Houston on July 15 to compete for the national title.

RAPIDS FACE SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC ON SATURDAY IN THIRD MATCH IN EIGHT DAYS: After this Wednesday's match, the Colorado Rapids face Seattle Sounders FC just three days later on Saturday, July 7 at CenturyLink Field at 9 p.m. MT. The match will be broadcast live on NBC Sports, as well as Mile High Sports Radio (93.7 FM, 1510 AM) and ESPN Deportes Radio (87.7 FM). CASEY AND SMITH SCORE FIRST GOALS OF 2012 AFTER RETURNING FROM INJURY: Colorado Rapids forward Conor Casey and midfielder Jamie Smith each scored their first goal of the season in the 3-0 victory over the Portland Timbers on Saturday. Midfielder Jaime CastrillÃ"n opened scoring in the 18th minute for his team-leading fifth goal of the season, and just four minutes later Casey scored his first goal since tearing his Achilles tendon on July 16, 2011. It was also the first time since the day of Casey's injury that he played alongside forward Omar Cummings. For Smith, his goal came in his first game back from a major knee injury suffered during the playoffs last October.

RAPIDS HOST WORLD CUP OF WINE AND BEER ON JULY 12: The fifth annual World Cup of Wine and Beer, hosted by the Colorado Rapids and Kroenke Sports Charities, takes place Thursday, July 12 on the concourse at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The event, which will be attended by Rapids players and coaches, is one of several fundraising events put on annually by KSC and features food and drinks from Rapids partners and area businesses, gaming tables, a silent auction and more. RAPIDS FACE SWANSEA CITY IN FRIENDLY ON JULY 24: Tickets to the July 24 matchup between Colorado Rapids and English Premier League side Swansea City are on sale to the public and start at $22, and a special two-pack offer with the September 5 game against the Portland Timbers is available for $40. The Swans finished their 2011-12 Premier League season with an impressive 1-0 victory over 8th place Liverpool to give them a 12-15-11 record, good for 11th in the table. RAPIDS SUPPORT HUNGER FREE COLORADO: The Colorado Rapids are supporting Hunger Free Colorado and other partners to bring awareness to the Summer Food Program by displaying a large plate, fork, and knife on the south-facing wall of the main building at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The Summer Food Program provides free, healthy meals to children while they are out of school for the summer where they may not have access to nutritious foods.
