Toronto FC's Danny Koevermans Voted MLS Player of the Week
Published on July 2, 2012 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK (Monday, July 2, 2012) Toronto FC's Danny Koevermans was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 17 of the 2012 MLS season. Koevermans scored in both of Toronto's games last week, a 3-0 win over the Montreal Impact last Wednesday and a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls on Saturday.
Koevermans scored his first goal of the week in the 78th minute of Toronto's game against the Impact. With his club up 2-0 against their Canadian rivals, Koevermans closed the game by finishing on a low cross from Ashtone Morgan in the middle of the six-yard box bringing the final score to 3-0.
His second of the week came just two minutes after conceding an early goal to New York in the fourth minute of play at BMO Field. Teammate Torsten Frings sent a high corner into the middle of the box where Koevermans connected with the ball and sent a powerful header over goalkeeper Ryan Meara. The sixth-minute goal proved to be the game-tying goal.
The two-goal week extended the Dutchman's scoring streak to four games.
This week's honor is Koevermans' second Player of the Week award, previously winning in Week 27 of the 2011 season.
The 33-year old edged out teammate Torsten Frings by a count of five votes to four; Chicago's Sean Johnson finished third with three votes.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
