Weekend Primer: Saints Set to Take on Stars, Capitols to Finish off Three-Game Weekend
January 12, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
Fresh off a 3-2 overtime victory over the Green Bay Gamblers, the Dubuque Fighting Saints are back at home for two more games this weekend as they take on the Lincoln Stars and Madison Capitols. Dubuque has won back to back games after regulation. Get set for both games this weekend with an extended Pregame Primer.
-Dubuque will be looking to complete the season sweep of Lincoln as they battle the Stars at the end of a three in three for Lincoln. The Stars lost back to back games against the Des Moines Buccaneers by 4-2 and 4-1 scores.
-Lincoln has struggled this season on the road. The Stars have just four points in 12 games, the fewest points on the road by any team in the USHL.
-Matias Maccelli propelled the Saints to their victory last night as he tallied three points. Maccelli factored in to every goal and scored the game winner in overtime. It was the second game in a row that Dubuque has won in Green Bay on a goal from Maccelli.
-The Fighting Saints will look to win back to back home games for just the second time this season. Dubuque beat Waterloo on November 3rd and Central Illinois on November 9th for their first stretch of back to back wins at home. The Fighting Saints have four wins at home in 12 games played at Mystique Community Ice Center.
-Aaron Randazzo has been in net for three of the four home wins for the Fighting Saints. Randazzo was in the net for both of the November wins and also for the most recent victory over the Omaha Lancers. The Saints net minder has six wins to his name on the year.
-The Lincoln Stars will roll in to town with the lowest point total in the West. Both Omaha and Lincoln sit at 20 points this season, with Lincoln holding the tiebreaker.
-The Stars are led by a star in the making. Shane Pinto has 29 points, with 16 goals and 13 assists in his first year in the league. Pinto currently sits second, six points behind Vladislav Firstov, in USHL rookie scoring this year.
-The Stars 83 goals scored are the third fewest in the league this season, while their 115 allowed are the most in the USHL. Lincoln has struggled on both sides of the puck and are a league worst 1-9 in their last 10.
-Madison, the Fighting Saints opponents for Sunday's game, have had their fair share of struggles this season as well. Madison sits last in the league with 16 points. The Capitols have the fewest goals scored with just 50 in 28 games.
-In the only meeting between Dubuque and Madison this year, the Capitols rode hot goaltending from Joseph Lamoreaux to a 2-1 victory.
-Recently the Capitols have made a few transactions, most notably a trade for Omaha defenseman Kalle Eriksson. Eriksson is now the team's leading scorer. Madison has the lowest leading scorer in the league.
-The Capitols are currently on a nine game losing streak, heading in to Saturday's action. The Capitols have played a lot of tight games but have struggled to find offense that makes the difference. During the entirety of the season, Madison has scored more than three goals just once.
-This will mark the second time this season that Dubuque has played three games in three days. The first time, the Fighting Saints went 1-0-1-1, collecting points in all three games.
