Week Five Recap
March 21, 2011 - Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release
Richmond, VA: The Indoor Football League is proud to reflect on another great weekend of football. As week five comes to conclusion, teams continue to fight for a top position in their division.
Week five kicked off on Thursday, March 17th as the now 1-2 La Crosse Spartans hosted the Kent Predators. La Crosse came into the contest under immense pressure to record their first win, and did so. Coach Gilbert Brown led a strong Spartan team to a 66-28 victory with another great showing on defense by X'Zavie Jackson. The Kent Predators now move on to their next contest in Chicago to face a tough Slaughter offense led by Ben Sankey at 1-2.
The Amarillo Venom continues to struggle this season as they sit at 0-3. The Wyoming Cavalry would travel to Amarillo to face the Venom Friday, as the Venom were desperately looking for the first win. The fourth quarter would begin with a tie score of 23 to 23, only to leave the Venom down 37-33 at the hands of Joe McClain, who would throw for two touchdowns in the fourth and 3 total TD's.
The Fairbanks Grizzlies would climb out of their three game slump this weekend as they topped the Allen Wranglers 55-37. The Grizzlies offense seemed to click with the help of QB Ryan Ratekin who threw for 212 yards and 5 touchdowns. Also, providing some help on offense was Eric Taylor, rushing for two short TDs against the wranglers.
The Green Bay Blizzard would put an end to Bloomington's undefeated season this Saturday as the home team Blizzard would put up 47 points in the last two quarters of the game. The Extreme would hold tough matching the Blizzard point for point before the half. Though the Extreme stayed within reach of the Blizzard, it was an extra score in each the third and fourth quarter that would put Green Bay ahead for the win 61-51.
Colorado keeps a clean sheet coming out of week 5 at 4-0. The Wenatchee Valley Venom would visit the ICE on Saturday for a division match up for the ages. Tempers flared high on and off the field as the Venom looked to mark its third win. David Knighton was determined to keep his season perfect as he recorded 233 total yards and three touchdowns. Running back Terry Washington would show nothing short of spectacular rushing for 85 yards and 3 touchdowns as well. The Wenatchee Venom will look to resurrect their winning record after this tough 52-24 loss when the Fairbanks Grizzlies visit this Saturday.
The match-up between Lehigh Valley and Richmond would prove to be a great contest again this week. The Richmond Revolution would top the Steelhawks in overtime with a touchdown run by Dennis Brown. A hungry Revolution would put up relentless defense to come back and take the win in overtime, a very similar to the last second finish in Richmond weeks ago with a final score of 48-45 Richmond.
Arizona Adrenaline would fall to a tough Reading defense this weekend which held them scoreless through the third quarter. Chris Malleo threw for 85 yards two touchdowns and one rushing touchdown to put the Express up by 28 in the first half. The Adrenaline defense would come out of the gates ready to play in the second half holding the Express only to 3 points in the third and fourth quarter. Arizona would score two touchdowns in the fourth bringing them close, but not close enough with the final score ending 31-14 in favor of Reading.
The West Texas Roughnecks traveled to Oklahoma City this weekend to face the Brawlers for their second match up of the season. Although this match up did not finish as with the same result as the last both teams would fight staying neck and neck until a last minute interception would push the Brawlers on top 31-27. The Brawlers will travel to Allen to face the Wranglers this Friday looking to come out 3-2.
Week Five will wrap up tonight as the Nebraska Danger travel to face an intimidating Sioux Falls Storm.
