FLORIDA FIRECATS (3-5) AT KENTUCKY HORSEMEN (3-4)
SATURDAY, MAY 23, 2009 - Rupp Arena (23,000) 7:00 P.M. ET
Saturday's action begins with the Florida Firecats traveling to Lexington, Kent. to face the Kentucky Horsemen for the second of three meetings this season. Florida won the first affair in Estero, Fla. in a shootout, 68-62, back in Week 4. The Firecats haven't had a great first half of the season. Florida hasn't been two games under .500 at the midway point of a season since 2003. Florida's most recent result came at home last week against No. 1 Spokane. The Shock defeated the Firecats, 49-38, in a sloppy turnover laden affair that saw three interceptions thrown and four fumbles given away at Germain Arena. Florida's troubles so far can be seen on both sides of the ball. The Firecats are only averaging 47.9 points per game while giving up 52.5. A marquee duo on the team is QB CHRIS WALLACE and WR CHRIS MCKINNEY. Wallace is completing 58.3% of his passes and has been intercepted six times so far. Wallace completed 21-for-36 passes against the Shock for 209 yards with five TDs and two interceptions. McKinney is making 8.86 receptions per game for an average of 100.4 yards and 16.6 points. The veteran WR had nine catches against Spokane for 43 yards and one touchdown. Veteran WR MAGIC BENTON had his best outing of the season with 10 catches for 136 yards and three scores. GARRETT RIVAS has been inconsistent in the kicking game, converting on 69.6 percent of his PATs, the lowest percentage in the league. Kentucky enters Week 9 ranked No. 14 in the latest league coaches poll. After a 3-2 start, the Horsemen have lost their last two games. The team has given up a combined 150 points over the past two weeks. While defense hasn't been Kentucky's forte so far, offense has been. The Horsemen will be a tough opponent for Florida's 14th ranked defense to handle. Kentucky is averaging 64.9 points per game, the second most in the league. While the explosive offense puts points on the board, the defense continues to allows opponents to keep games close, allowing 62.1 points per contest. QBs JARED LORENZEN and JUSTIN RASCATI are taking turns in the pocket with relatively successful results. Lorenzen is averaging 19.7 yards rushing per game and 219.3 yards passing. In last week's loss to the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings, Lorenzen completed 18-of-35 passes for 213 yards and four touchdowns, while Rascati completed all 12 of his passes for 173 yards and another four touchdowns. WR LONNELL DEWALT is the team's top receiver, averaging 8.86 receptions per game and 17.1 points. Against Bossier-Shreveport, Dewalt caught 12 passes for 124 yards and three scores. DB MATT FORBES is tied for the league lead in interceptions with six. So far this season, the defense has made 15 interceptions but just five sacks. Florida's defense will have their work cut out for them as they try to control the Horsemen scoring machine, but Kentucky's unpredictable defense may leave the game available for the taking.

GREEN BAY BLIZZARD (4-3) AT WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON PIONEERS (6-1)
SATURDAY, MAY 23, 2009 - Wachovia Arena (7,950) 7:30 P.M. ET
Week 9 action continues with the Green Bay Blizzard traveling to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to tackle the Pioneers. This week's battle will be the eighth all-time meeting between the two clubs. The Pioneers lead the series, 5-2. Green Bay is currently ranked No. 11 in the latest league coaches poll. Last week the Blizzard defeated Peoria, 55-34 at the Resch Center in Green Bay. The Blizzard boast one of the best rushing attacks in the af2. They average the second most rushing yards per game (38.3). FB ORLANDO MEDLOCK is leading the charge, rushing for 134 yards (22.3/game, fourth highest) and eight touchdowns so far this season. Last week Medlock rushed for six yards and one touchdown. QB GINO GUIDUGLI has thrown 21 TDs so far and is averaging 192.3 passing yards per game. Guidugli has found a reliable receiver in WR NATE FORSE. Forse is averaging 7.14 receptions per game for 91 yards. Against Peoria, Forse had a team-high in receptions with nine for 130 yards and three touchdowns. WR ANTHONY CRISSINGER-HILL also made nine grabs for 141 yards and three scores. The Blizzard also have one of the league's best kickers in BOB FORSTROM. Forstrom is leading the league in both field goals made per game (1.57) and in field goal percentage (61.1). He also has the second highest points per game as a kicker with an average of 9.6. The defense has also looked impressive this season with 12 interceptions and 21 sacks (No. 2 in the league). OL/DL ANTHONY HOKE has 5.5 sacks so far this season (T-6th in the league). As impressive as Green Bay has been this season, they are facing one of their greatest challenges for the season in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers. The No. 2-ranked Pioneers are leading the league in scoring (65.9 points per game), scoring defense (39.3 points per game) and pass efficiency (68.5% completion rate, two interceptions). K DAVID DAVIS is also at the top of the league in PAT percentage, nailing 96.9% of his extra point attempts. QB RYAN VENA is at the top of his game. Vena currently leads the league in passer rating at 133.8. His two interceptions are the least in the league among regular starters. Last week, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defeated Mahoning Valley, 73-37, with Vena completing 30-of-39 passes for 331 yards and seven touchdowns. Four of those touchdown passes found the hands of WR J.J. OUTLAW, who made nine grabs total on the evening. Outlaw is averaging nearly 14 points per game (13.7). The offense overall is making sure to capitalize on every opportunity they get, scoring on 91.4% of their red zone plays, a league high. FB KIRBY GRIFFIN is another player to watch. Griffin ranks second in the af2 in rushing yards (185) and third in rushing TDs (10). The defense is doing their part as well. DB MICHEAUX ROBINSON leads the league in passes defended with 18 (12 PBUs, 6 INTs - T1st in af2). Robinson recorded three tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one interception and one pass breakup in the team's recent win against the Thunder. Although Green Bay will likely test the Pioneers early, expect the home team to prevail. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has won 21 straight regular season home games at Wachovia Arena, a streak that dates back to 2006.

QUAD CITY STEAMWHEELERS (4-3) AT PEORIA PIRATES (1-6)
SATURDAY, MAY 23, 2009 - Peoria Civic Center (9,873) 8:00 P.M. ET
The Quad City Steamwheelers travel to Peoria this week to face the Pirates in a Midwest Division matchup. This will be the 12th meeting between the two clubs and second so far this season. Quad City won the first affair at home in Week 1, 72-56. The Steamwheelers are currently in a three-way tie atop the division standings with Green Bay and Iowa. QB J.J. RATERINK is completing 64.3% of his passes and has 40 TD passes and eight INTs. WR JESSE SCHMIDT is one of the league's top receivers. Schmidt has 24 TD grabs on the season. He is also averaging 11.29 catches per game for 156.4 yards, and has the fourth highest points per game average (20.9). K MATT DENNY has the second highest PAT percentage of 93.3. Quad City lost last weekend to the South Georgia Wildcats by a touchdown, 56-49. Raterink completed 21-of-40 passes for seven touchdowns and was intercepted twice. Schmidt caught four of those touchdown passes while racking up 167 receiving yards. The Peoria Pirates are in the midst of a tumultuous season, having only won one game (versus Milwaukee) and recently losing their head coach, Bruce Cowdrey. This weekend's game will be the first under new coach Mike Hohensee. One of the AFL's most-recognizable figures, Hohensee is the only head coach in Chicago Rush history. In his eight seasons at the helm, he guided the Rush to an 83-57 overall record, eight playoff appearances, four Central Division titles and the ArenaBowl XX title. Overall, Hohensee spent 15 seasons as an AFL head coach. He inherits a Pirates squad that is suffering in many areas, including giving up the most points per game in the league (64.6). The defense has also allowed the opposition to score from the red zone 90.2 percent of the time, giving up 36 touchdowns so far. QB KENT SMITH has had moments of promise but hasn't shown much in the way of consistency. So far the rookie from Central Michigan is completing just 54 percent of his passes. QB LUKE DRONE has been assisting in the pocket, last weekend completing 4-of-12 passes for one touchdown in a 55-34 road loss to Green Bay. This game will be a showcase of the Pirates' new coach and new attitude, but it will probably be too soon for enough of an improvement to be made for the club to come out with a win.

AMARILLO DUSTERS (1-6) AT IOWA BARNSTORMERS (4-3)
SATURDAY, MAY 23, 2009 - Wells Fargo Arena (8,403) 8:05 P.M. ET
This Saturday the Dusters make their first-ever trip to Iowa to take on the Barnstormers at Wells Fargo Arena. Amarillo, after losing its first six games, won for the first time in 2009 last week at home against Corpus Christi, 42-32. The Dusters forced turnovers on Corpus Christi's first three possessions. Amarillo LB JOHN KING got the scoring started with a 12-yard interception return for a touchdown. In addition, Amarillo got an interception from MYRON NEWBERRY and fumble recoveries from STANLEY SMITH and GERARD LEWIS to aid in their staunch defensive effort. Leading the Dusters on offense was QB COLLIN DRAFTS. Drafts had three touchdown passes (2 INTs) and one rushing TD. WRs ALEX WATSON and BRENT CRAFT and TE ABRAHAM HOLLOWAY each had one touchdown catch. Overall, Amarillo has struggled to score on the offensive end. They currently average just 34 points per game (24th out of 25 teams). Turnovers have also been an issue as the Dusters are tied for fourth in turnovers given up (20). Watson leads the club with nine receiving touchdowns. King leads the defense with three interceptions. The Barnstormers enter this Week 9 matchup ranked No. 10 overall in the latest league coaches poll. They are currently in a three-way tie with Quad City and Green Bay for first place in the Midwest Division. Iowa's most recent game was a 46-41 road win in Week 7 at Green Bay. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Barnstormers. Iowa QB Brian Villanueva (16-of-31 passing, 227 yards) threw three TDs on the night, two of which went to WR Tim Dodge in the first half as the Barnstormers built a 30-13 halftime lead. Iowa scored first in the second half on a 1-yard touchdown run by Villanueva to push the lead to 37-13. Dodge finished with a game-high 130 receiving yards on eight catches with two touchdowns. DB JASON SIMPSON led the defense with a sack, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. The veteran defender leads the Barnstormers in tackles for loss (4.5) and is tied for second in sacks (2). Simpson also ranks third on the squad in tackles (30). DB TANNER VARNER leads the af2 in tackles with 64 overall. As a team, Iowa ranks seventh in scoring defense (46.4 ppg) and eighth in sacks (12). On offense, Dodge and fellow WR ERRICK MCCOWN are the team's two top playmakers. McCown leads the club in scoring with 78 points (13 total TDs: 9 receiving) with Dodge a close second with 72 points (12 total TDs: 9 receiving). The Barnstormers are currently 1-1 at home in 2009 and have boasted crowds of over 11,000 strong at each game so far. Amarillo has a chance to give Iowa a fight this week, but the Dusters will need another strong defensive effort to tune out the loud partisan crowd on hand in Des Moines.

CENTRAL VALLEY COYOTES (3-4) AT SPOKANE SHOCK (7-0)
SATURDAY, MAY 23, 2009 - Spokane Arena (10,653) 10:00 P.M. ET
Central Valley travels to Spokane, Wash. this weekend for the first of two head-to-head meetings with the No. 1-ranked Shock. The Coyotes hope the eighth time is a charm on Saturday as Spokane has won all seven games so far in the all-time series. Central Valley, however, will likely be without the services of starting QB JASON MURRIETTA. Murrietta injured his right shoulder on a late hit last week in the team's 68-51 home loss to Arkansas. The second-year signal caller from Northern Arizona has 38 TD passes in seven games this year and ranks eighth overall in passer rating (119.7). Murrietta made nine game appearances for Spokane in 2008. WR/LB Weston Borba and WR Phil Goodman were also unable to finish the game due to injuries sustained against the Twisters. WR LAMONTE JONES (10-140-4 TDs) led the Coyotes in defeat. Backup QB RYAN O'HARA, who completed 8-of-16 passes for 72 yards and three TDs in a relief role, should get his first af2 start this week. LB JAJUAN HUDDLESTON had a game-high 7.5 tackles. The Coyotes defense ranks 20th in the af2 in scoring defense, allowing opponents 57.7 points per game. They also rank near the bottom of the league standings in turnovers forced with 12. The team's top playmaker in 2009 has been Jones. Jones ranks second overall in all-purpose yards with 1,328. He also ranks fifth in receptions per game (10.57) and seventh in receiving yards per game (118). Central Valley is currently ranked No. 16 in the latest league coaches poll. The Shock maintained their position as the only unbeaten team in the league after a 49-38 road victory over Florida. It was a sloppy turnover laden affair that saw three interceptions thrown and four fumbles given away. After trailing 21-12 at halftime, the Firecats scored on three straight possessions between the third and fourth quarters to make it a 35-32 game with eight minutes left. The Shock scored on their next possession and forced a second interception in the game's final minutes. WR Andy Olson finished the night leading all receivers with 11 receptions for 151 yards. He also had two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving. In the end Spokane made the most of its scoring opportunities, converting on five of seven trips into the red zone. DB Stanley Franks (Aaron's Defensive Player of the Game: 12 tackles, 1 INT) and DL Justin Warren (2 sacks) stood out for Spokane on defense. The Shock are a well-balanced, efficient ball club that ranks sixth in scoring offense (59.6 ppg) and fifth in scoring defense (42.7 ppg allowed). Spokane ranks second only to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in turnovers lost with nine (6 fumbles, 3 INTs). They also rank third in turnover margin at plus+10 (19 gained, 9 lost). Individually, QB NICK DAVILA ranks third overall in passer rating at 127.3. Veteran WR RAUL VIJIL leads the club in scoring, receiving, return yards and all-purpose yards. On the defensive side, DL BEN MCCOMBS is the league's all-time leader in sacks with 48. He is also tied for the league lead in sacks with seven. He also played with Central Valley in 2008. Franks (team-best 51.5 tackles) and fellow DB SERGIO GILLIAM (team-high 4 INTs) are also playmakers on defense for Spokane. Despite the overall series score, Central Valley has played the Shock tough through the years. This time out, however, without Murrietta, the Coyotes will need a near flawless performance to keep things close.

BOISE BURN (5-2) AT STOCKTON LIGHTNING (2-5)
SATURDAY, MAY 23, 2009 - Stockton Arena (9,737) 10:00 P.M. ET
Boise travels to Stockton, Calif. this week for the second of three head-to-head meetings with the Lighting in 2009. The Burn, who own a 5-1 all-time edge in the series, defeated Stockton in the first meeting this season three weeks ago in Boise, 68-18. The Burn enter Week 9 ranked No. 8 in the latest league coaches poll. Last week the team set a season high and tied a team record with 77 points in a 77-28 home victory against Tri-Cities. QB Taylor Tharp finished with seven TD tosses for Boise for 239 yards with two interceptions. WR Jerard Rabb finished with four catches for 118 yards and four TDs. Rabb also recovered a loose ball in the end zone on special teams. WR NICHIREN FLOWERS also impressed on offense with three total touchdowns (2 receiving, 1 rushing) and six catches for 105 yards. Defensively, DB Nygel Rogers led the way with two interceptions and seven tackles. DBs Ernie James (8 tackles) and Terrance Sanders (1 INT) and DL Alex Guerrero came up with the only sack of the game as the Burn defense controlled the Fever offense. Despite losing top receiver CASEY ALLEN (42-555-8 TDs) to the injured list this week, Boise still has a solid group of pass catchers available to go to in Flowers (team-high 16 receiving TDs) and Rabb (8 receiving TDs). As a group, the Burn rank ninth in the af2 in scoring offense, averaging 58.0 points per game. A big reason behind Boise's success this year is the team's defense. Boise ranks just behind Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in points per game allowed (39.7). LB LEVI MADARIETA leads the club with five interceptions. Sanders has four interceptions and a team-high 43.5 tackles. Stockton enters this week coming off its best outcome of the season last Saturday against Rio Grande Valley. The underdog Lightning, who had just one win, scored their second victory with an 83-56 triumph against the Dorados. QB Chad Cavender, in his first af2 campaign and WR JUSTIN TAPLIN, in his third af2 season, both had career nights in the win. Cavender, in his third career start, set a team record with 10 touchdown passes against the Dorados. The former Sioux Falls standout also completed 21-of-35 passes for a career-high 359 yards with just one interception. The rookie signal caller also had six rushes for 11 yards and one touchdown. The majority of Cavender's scoring passes on Saturday went to Taplin as the Arizona State alum set a Lightning single-game record with seven touchdown catches. He finished the night with nine receptions for a game-high 172 yards. Taplin leads Stockton in receiving (65-856-21 TDs) and ranks among the league leaders in points per game (3rd-21.7), receiving yards per game (4th-142.7) and receptions per game (4th-10.83). DB Tim McCullough led the Lightning defensive effort against the Dorados with 5.5 tackles, one interception and three pass breakups. Overall, Stockton's defense has been a sore spot so far. The Lightning allow nearly 60 points per contest (21st - 59.4) and are tied for last in team sacks (6) and interceptions (5). Last time Stockton played Boise, Cavender struggled mightily in his first start under center, throwing four interceptions and completing just 21-of-47 passes. If he plays more like he did last week against Rio Grande Valley, the Lightning could make things interesting.
