July 10, 2008 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
FRIDAY, JULY 11, 2008 - City Bank Coliseum (7,040) 8:00 P.M. ET
Week 16 kicks off Friday night with the Austin Wranglers traveling upstate to take on the Lubbock Renegades. These two clubs have only met once before overall which was earlier this season. The Renegades won that contest, 75-41, in Week 2. Lubbock QB ROBERT KENT led the way to the comfortable victory with eight total touchdowns (five passing, three rushing). Since the loss, Austin has gone 7-4 and enters Week 16 ranked No. 11 in the latest league coaches poll. The Wranglers also currently lead the Southwest Division. Austin's most recent outing was a 41-38 victory against Southwest Division rival Texas in Week 14. Rookie QB ANDY HALL connected with four different receivers for touchdowns. WR MEL LONG led the receiving corps with eight catches for 93 yards and one touchdown. FB/LB KAMAU JACKSON was a big factor as well with two touchdown runs, including the game-winner with just over a minute and a half remaining in the final quarter. The defense was paced by DB DEMETRIE MCCRAY (7.5 tackles, 1 INT, 4 PBUs). WR JOHN ROBERSON has been Austin's top playmaker in 2008. He currently ranks in the Top-3 in the league in receptions (102), receiving yards (1,428) and receiving touchdowns (31). Long and Jackson have been impact players on both sides of the ball and are among the league's top two-way performers. Long has over 750 yards receiving with 18 TDs to go along with 27.5 tackles and four interceptions. Jackson leads the squad in rushing yards (239) and rushing TDs (11) in addition to 25.5 tackles (4.5 for loss) on defense. Lubbock enters Week 16 ranked No. 9 in the latest league coaches poll. The Renegades are coming off a tough 74-62 loss two weeks ago at Oklahoma City. The 74 points scored by the Yard Dawgz was the most allowed by the Lubbock defense all season. Three first half turnovers (2 fumbles, 1 INT) and a missed field goal hurt the Renegades cause while Oklahoma City scored 22 points in the second quarter to take a 35-28 lead at the half. The Yard Dawgz began the third quarter with a score to take a two touchdown advantage. The two clubs would exchange scores until Oklahoma City stopped the Renegades on a drive with just under 1:00 to play. Kent finished with 286 yards and six TDs in the loss while WR ALVANCE ROBINSON had two TD grabs with game-highs in receiving yards (115) and all-purpose yards (278). Kent leads the league in total touchdowns (86; 72 - passing, 14 - rushing). He also ranks second overall in passing yards (3,453) and touchdown passes (72). Robinson ranks second in the af2 in yards per catch (17.9) and fifth in receiving yards (1,290). The Renegades offense ranks fourth in the league in scoring, averaging 55.6 points per game. Rookie DB VIRGIL GRAY has been Lubbock's top defensive player. The Rhode Island product leads the squad in tackles (69.5) and interceptions (8) and is tied for the team lead in pass breakups (24). This is the last regular season home game for Lubbock. The Renegades are currently 5-2 at home. This contest looks too close to call.
