Louisville Fire 59, MANCHESTER WOLVES 49 (7,244)

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Louisville Fire (7-5) rode an incredible six-touchdown performance from Schutt Offensive Player of the Game OS Rob Mager to a 59-49 win over the Manchester Wolves (5-7) Friday night before 7,244 fans on Brady Sullivan Field at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, N.H. After being held in check during the first quarter, Mager tallied two touchdowns in the second, third and fourth quarters, and finished with 11 catches for 148 yards. The red-hot Fire quarterback Brett Dietz completed 29-of-43 pass attempts for 284 yards and six touchdowns through the air, while running in one score himself. With Dietz's seven touchdowns, he now leads the af2 with 83 total touchdowns. His 77 passing touchdowns are second in the league, only one behind Central Valley's Scott Rislov. But as good as the Fire's offense was, it was their defense that stole the show as they stepped up time after time, daring the Wolves to score by kicking a total of five on-side kicks during the game. The Fire defense finished with two interceptions on the night, including one for a touchdown when ADT Defensive Player of the Game Kabote Sikyala returned a deflected pass off of the hands of Wolves' receiver Wendell Williams for a 13-yard score. WR/DB Lance Taylor earned the U.S. Army Ironman of the Game and Cutters Catch of the Game awards thanks to his five catches for 36 yards on offense and one interception on defense. Wolves' QB D. Bryant finished with 162 yards for five touchdowns in the air, with one rushing score. Wendell Williams led Manchester with eight catches for 47 yards and two scores, while Steve Gonzalez tallied five catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns.

MEMPHIS XPLORERS 81, SOUTH GEORGIA WILDCATS 53 (2,522)

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The Memphis Xplorers (9-3) avenged an earlier season loss to South Georgia (1-11) with an 81-53 victory over the Wildcats Saturday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The Xplorers' 81 points were the second-most in team history.QB Brian Jones threw just one incomplete pass as he went 22-of-23 for 281 yards to go with a career-high and team record-tying eight touchdown passes. Both teams' offenses were clicking in the first half, with Memphis scoring on all six of its possessions and the Wildcats converting on five of seven. The biggest play of the half, and possibly the game, came on the final play of the first half. With Memphis leading 40-34, South Georgia lined up for a 28-yard field goal attempt with :04 remaining. Dan Burnett's kick went wide left and Memphis' Deon Giddens caught the ball off the net, turned and ran it 57 yards for a touchdown, giving the Xplorers a 47-34 Xplorers lead at the half. It was a lead that the Xplorers would not give up, as they outscored the Wildcats 34-19 in the second half. South Georgia QB Julian Reese was harassed all game long by the Memphis pass rush. Reese completed 18-of-36 passes for 202 yards and five touchdowns. Memphis OS/KR Kevin Prentiss caught nine passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns, including the 100th TD reception of his career. Prentiss also returned his all-time af2 leading 14th kickoff return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Wildcats OS Chris McKinney, who came into the game third in the league with 94 receptions, caught 10 balls for 114 yards and four scores. The Xplorers remain a half-game behind the first-place Florida Wildcats in the South Division.

Tulsa Talons 87, AMARILLO DUSTERS 38 (3,004)

AMARILLO, Texas - Tulsa turned it on in a big way on Saturday with an 87-38 road win at Amarillo's Cal Farley Coliseum. The 49-point losing margin was the largest in Dusters franchise history. Amarillo's 71-30 loss to Memphis in last year's playoff semifinals was the previous worst loss. The Dusters scored on their first play from scrimmage and led 20-14 before the Talons reeled off 53 unanswered points to put this one away. Quarterback Brian Zbydniewski threw TD passes of 45 yards to Donta Bright and 32 yards to Titus Ivory on the opening two possessions before running 1-yard for another on the third possession to give the Dusters a 20-14 lead. But after Tulsa tied the game at 20 on its next possession, things went downhill rapidly for the Dusters. They were stopped on their next possession and Tulsa scored for a 27-20 lead as the first quarter ended. Zbydniewski threw the first of three interceptions on the first play of the second quarter and the Talons soon scored for a 33-20 lead. The Dusters' QB was intercepted again on the ensuing possession, and again the Talons answered with a TD for a 40-20 advantage that continued to increase every time they had the ball. The Schutt Offensive Player of the Game Award went to Tulsa QB Mark Radlinski, who threw four TD passes and ran for two more. The Talons rushed for six touchdowns and returned a kickoff 50 yards for another score to begin the second half. Don McGee (5 catches, 64 yards, 2 TDs, 53-yard kick return TD) earned U.S. Army Ironman of the Game honors. Zbydniewski finished 12-of-34 for 279 yards and four TDs for Amarillo. The loss was the Dusters' fifth straight.

Florida Firecats 60, BIRMINGHAM STEELDOGS 27 (5,121)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Schutt Offensive Player of the Game Chris Wallace finished 20-of-32 for 255 yards and seven touchdowns as the Florida Firecats defeated the Birmingham Steeldogs 60-27, in front of 5,121 fans at the BJCC Arena. With the win, Florida secured its hold on the South Division, improving their record to 9-2. Birmingham falls back to .500 with the loss at 6-6. The Firecats showed the Steeldogs why they have the No. 1 scoring offense in af2, scoring touchdowns on each of their first nine drives. It started with Ethenic Sands pulling down two quick Wallace touchdown passes in the first quarter to give Florida a 14-0 lead. Birmingham never could catch up. Florida's Brittney Tellis caught nine passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns while Sands caught six passes for 48 yards and four scores. Veteran Magic Benton also hit the 100-yard receiving mark with six catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns. WR/LB Lawrence Story led the Steeldogs' receiving corps, catching five passes for 84 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown pass from QB Ryan Hawk. Hawk struggled under center, completing only 6-of-11 passes for 76 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was spelled by Robert Kent in the second half, who completed 9-of-19 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. He threw an interception on the last play of the game.

GREEN BAY BLIZZARD 65, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers 35 (4,324)

GREEN BAY, Wisc. - The Blizzard handed the Pioneers their worst loss of the season, 65-35, Saturday night at the Resch Center. The win brought the Blizzard (7-5) to within one game of the Pioneers (8-4) for the American Conference East Division lead. On their first possession of the game, the Blizzard struck paydirt as Schutt Offensive Player of the Game QB James MacPherson hooked up with WR/DB Luke Leverson for a 21-yard touchdown. After a defensive stop, MacPherson connected with Leverson again, this time from 7-yards out for another score. MacPherson finished the game 12-of-21 for 197 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for a score. Leverson caught four passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns. He also recorded an interception on defense on his way to the U.S. Army Ironman of the Game Award. At the end of the first quarter, Green Bay led 14-0 and would never trail. After scoring ten seconds into the quarter with Pioneers QB Mike Granieri finding WR/LB Leroy McFadden for a touchdown, the Blizzard regained control of the game on their next possession as FB/LB Jeff Cogell plunged his way up the middle for a 4-yard touchdown. The Blizzard led 31-14 at halftime. In the second half, Green Bay did not relinquish the momentum. On back-to-back possessions, the Blizzard found the end zone: first it was Cogell with a 1-yard touchdown run, and then it was a 17-yard touchdown reception by OS Brent Holmes. Late in the quarter, Granieri scored on a 5-yard run, but it would prove to be too little too late for Wilkes-Barre. Green Bay put up three more scores in the fourth quarter. Granieri finished with 239 yards passing, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for two scores. McFadden had a game-high 12 catches for 97 yards and one touchdown.

Quad City Steamwheelers 65, TENNESSEE VALLEY VIPERS 59 (3,749)

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - In the home debut of Tennessee Valley Vipers new head coach Milt Theodosatos, the Vipers fell short in a non-conference affair to Quad City, 65-59, Saturday night at the Von Braun Center. The Steamwheelers improved to 5-7 while the Vipers fell to 2-10. Vipers QB Chris Gunn completed 20-of-36 passes for 265 yards. Torrey Day caught eight passes for 123 yards and three touchdowns. The Steamwheelers struck first on their very first play from scrimmage when Tim Dodge caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Tim Hicks. Kimo Naehu kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Tennessee Valley answered with Gunn's 10-yard touchdown pass to Day and Steven Lee's kick for a 7-all tie. Farouk Adelekan gave the Vipers a 9-7 lead when he sacked Hicks in the end zone for a safety. In the first quarter alone, Adelekan had two sacks and blocked a field goal attempt. Both teams got two touchdowns in the second quarter, and Quad City led 31-30 at halftime after Naehu's 21-yard field goal on the final play of the half. The game looked all but over late in the fourth quarter when Quad City went up 65-43 on Hicks' 35-yard touchdown pass to Kris Peters, but Gunn and the Vipers would not go away easily. Gunn connected with Day from 4 yards out and threw to Ron Monteilh for a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 65-51. He threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Day and ran for the two-point conversion to get the Vipers within 65-59 with 51 seconds left. The Steamwheelers, however, recovered Tennessee Valley's onside kick attempt to solidify the win. Hicks was named Schutt Offensive Player of the Game with 357 yards passing and seven touchdowns with one interception. Dodge was named the U.S. Army Ironman of the Game (7 catches, 149 yds, 3 TDs, 1 rush TD, 2.5 tackles, fumble recovery for TD). Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz 56, RIO GRANDE VALLEY DORADOS 14 (4,625)

HIDALGO, Texas - The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz cruised to their second straight win Saturday night in a 56-14 victory over the Rio Grande Valley Dorados at Obra Homes Field at Dodge Arena. The loss was Rio Grande Valley's first at home in 2006 and dropped the club to 5-7 on the season. Midwest Division leading Oklahoma City improved to 9-3. The Dawgz shut out the Dorados in all but one quarter of play. QB Craig Strickland completed 17-of-26 attempts for 190 yards and six touchdowns, earning the Schutt Offensive Player of the Game Award. The Dorados fell behind 21-0 by the 13:32 mark of the second quarter, and mustered both of their scores in that frame. Rookie QB Ryan Porter, in his first pro start, found Dwight Counter for both touchdowns. An apparent 37-yard scoring catch by Chris Canty at the end of the first half would have cut the Yard Dawgz lead to 28-21, but was called back due to a holding penalty. The Dawgz ran away with things from there, outscoring the Dorados 28-0 in the final 30 minutes. Strickland connected with Jarrail Jackson and Al Hunt for a pair of touchdowns each. He also found Anthony Dingle and Fred Shaw in the end zone for scores. Jackson finished with seven catches for 94 yards. Porter struggled overall for the Dorados, completing just 19-of-42 passes for 163 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

SPOKANE SHOCK 49, Albany Conquest 46 (9,457)

SPOKANE, Wash. - It wasn't the Fourth of July, but the Spokane Shock put on an explosive show, defeating the Albany Conquest, 49-46. The Shock's offense kicked into gear in the second half behind backup QB Kyle Rowley. Trailing Albany 30-14 at the half, Rowley was inserted to start the third quarter and finished the game 19-of-25 for 193 yards and four touchdowns. Rowley made the most of his playing time, helping the Shock to the come-from-behind win over the Conquest, and in doing so, won the Schutt Offensive Player of the Week Award. The two newest members of the Shock - WR/DB Jesse Hendrix and DS Isaiah Trufant - certainly made their presence felt as they combined for 12.5 tackles with four pass break-ups. Hendrix also made a crucial on-side kick recovery in the fourth quarter that helped propel the Shock to take the lead, thanks to a successful two-point conversion by WR/DB Anthony Griffin on a pass from Rowley. QB Ryan Vena led Albany in defeat. Vena passed for 229 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed for his league-leading 19th score of the season. The Conquest came out of the gates firing on all cylinders as the squad scored on every possession they had in the first half. Vena's top receivers - OS Bakari Brown and WR/DB Thomas Anthony - played well in the first half but were shut down in the second half thanks to the Shock secondary of Hendrix, Trufant, and DS Rob Keefe. Shock receiver Raul Vijil had a game-high three receiving scores among his seven total catches for 93 yards. Anthony led Albany with eight catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns.

STOCKTON LIGHTNING 51, Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings 41 (6,778)

STOCKTON, Calif. - Behind a stingy defensive effort, the Stockton Lightning (5-7) claimed a 51-41 victory over the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings (2-9) at Stockton Arena on Saturday night. The Lightning defense started strong, holding the Battle Wings offense to a 21-yard field goal on the opening drive of the game. Stockton quickly scored a touchdown on their first offensive play from scrimmage as OL/TE Anthony Bolden caught a strike from QB Josh Blankenship and rumbled 35 yards into the end zone. Bossier-Shreveport answered for a 9-7 lead when QB Stan Hill found WR/DB Anthony Chambers in the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Stockton responded as on the ensuing kickoff, Lightning WR/DB Kenyatte Morgan outraced the Battle Wings kickoff coverage team en route to a 57-yard touchdown return for a 14-9 advantage. The score would be 24-20 in favor of Stockton at halftime. Fueled by a long second half kickoff return by Morgan, Stockton came out of the locker room firing in the third quarter as Blankenship hooked up with WR/DB Atnas Maeko for a 15-yard score on the first offensive play of the half, giving the Lightning a 31-20 cushion. After both teams exchanged touchdowns, the Lightning defense forced a Battle Wings fumble and recovered the football to thwart a potential Bossier-Shreveport scoring threat, eventually ending the third quarter with the Lightning ahead, 37-26. The fourth quarter began with Lightning OL/DL Chris Harris scoring on a short 1-yard touchdown run. Bossier-Shreveport answered with a touchdown of its own, courtesy of WR/DB Brandon Campbell to bring the score to 44-33. Blankenship then found Morgan in the end zone for 13-yard touchdown, Stockton's final tally of the game, which was answered by Chambers' 14-yard touchdown reception with no time left. Morgan was named Schutt Offensive Player of the Game and U.S. Army Ironman of the Game, catching four passes for 50 yards, accumulating 145 yards on five kickoff returns, and scoring two total touchdowns. Bossier-Shreveport's Anthony Chambers led all receivers with 15 catches for 168 yards and three touchdowns.

Central Valley Coyotes 61, EVERETT HAWKS 42 (3,855)

EVERETT, Wash. - After losing to the Central Valley Coyotes two weeks ago, the Hawks hoped for a different outcome on their home turf in front of 3,855 fans. The Coyotes, however, had other thoughts, winning their final meeting with Everett, 61-42. The Hawks started on the right foot when QB Brian Baker completed a 22-yard touchdown pass to WR/DB Milton Myers on the second play from scrimmage, but the Coyotes answered with Schutt Offensive Player of the Game QB Scott Rislov throwing a 35-yard touchdown to WR/DB Lamonte Jones. With the score tied at 7-7 with 9:48 left in the first quarter, the Hawks new player, OS J.R. Thomas, torched the Coyotes for a 44-yard touchdown to take a 14-7 lead. This seemed to spark the defense because on the Coyotes next drive, the Hawks were able to stop the Coyotes on a crucial 4th and goal. While it seemed to be everything that the Hawks needed, it ended up to be the last of the Hawks solid play. With :47 seconds left in the 1st quarter, the Hawks fumbled on their 1-yard line. Then after back-to-back penalties by the Hawks, Marvin Brown evened the score for the Coyotes at 14-14. It was all Coyotes after that. Before the end of the half, Coach Tony Wells replaced QB Brian Baker with QB Wes Beschoner after Baker went 10-of-16 for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Beschoner looked promising for the Hawks after completing a 48-yard touchdown to Hassan Brockman, but the Coyotes were just too much to handle, leading 28-21 at the half. In the second half the sloppy play of the Hawks continued and by the end of the game, the Hawks had 13 penalties for 107 yards as well as three fumbles and two interceptions. The Coyotes took advantage of every mistake the Hawks made. Rislov finished the night 17-of-28 for 249 yards and seven touchdowns, while Wes Beschoner finished 11-of-17 with two touchdown passes, two interceptions and two touchdown runs. Down 42-54, the Hawks hoped for once last chance with a onside kick with 3:03 left in the game, but the Coyotes easily recovered the kick and FB/LB Matt Guardia for the Coyotes ran the ball into the endzone to extend the lead to 61-42, which would be the final score.

SUNDAY, JUNE 25

Arkansas Twisters 50, BAKERSFIELD BLITZ 32 (4,943)

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Arkansas Twisters flew out west knowing they were playing the number one ranked defense in the league, but it was the Twisters' defense that dominated Bakersfield en route to a 50-32 win in front of 4,943 fans. The Twisters (8-4) led 7-6 in the second quarter when the defense took over. Byron Mitchell-Hughey tipped Blitz QB Bobby Pesavento's pass and it was intercepted by Pierre Thomas. Steve Watson hit Pesavento as he was throwing on Bakersfield's next drive, and Mitchell-Hughey intercepted the pass. The Twisters drove down field and scored when Church hit Robert Kilow for a 6-yard score and the extra point put Arkansas up, 21-6. Bakersfield (7-5) scored late in the first half but Arkansas seized the momentum back when David Carlton hit a 49-yard field goal with just :15 seconds left in the first half. Bakersfield attempted a late field goal in the first half, but C. J. McLain blocked it and tackled the kicker in the endzone for a safety to give Arkansas a 26-12 halftime lead. The Blitz began the second half by scoring when Pesavento hit Reynolds for a 44-yard catch and run play and the extra point pulled Bakersfield within 26-19.
