 Indoor Football League

Week 10 IFL Recap

April 28, 2011 - Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release

Richmond, VA: Week 10 for the Indoor Football League was full of strong competitions while some of the League's teams made claims on playoff hopes and others' hopes faltered.

The Indoor Football League began Week 10 with the Bloomington Extreme stopping by the La Crosse Spartans hoping to maintain the three-game winning streak they have begun. From the beginning of the game, the Extreme retained the goal to win in mind. By halftime, the Extreme's defense prevented the Spartans from scoring more than 12 points and allowing the offense to stay on the field to score a total of 50 points. Unfortunately for the Spartans, their offense was not able to overcome the power of the Extreme defense, succumbing to 1 inception, 2 lost fumbles, and 4 sacks. In the second half, the Spartans realized that it would take a stronger effort to remain in the competition; however, these efforts were too late for this round of competition; the Bloomington Extreme earned their four-game winning streak by defeating the La Crosse Spartans, 71-26.

The second battle was between the Chicago Slaughter and the Fairbanks Grizzlies. In the first quarter of the game, the Slaughter had a very slow start only scoring 9 points while the Grizzlies took advantage of the opportunity to score 20 points in the first quarter alone. After closing out the first quarter, 20-9 with the Grizzlies on top, the Slaughter knew that it was time to take it up a notch. For the second and third quarter the two teams both scored a total of 13 points. The Slaughter and the Grizzlies were evenly matched throughout the game, both scoring 5 touchdowns and only a 4-yard difference in total offensive yards; therefore, it came down to the fourth quarter to determine a winner. The Slaughter outscored the Grizzlies 13-7; however, the 6 point lead in the fourth quarter was not enough to overcome the deficit set by the Grizzlies in the first quarter, which led to their victory, 40-35, Fairbanks Grizzlies.

The Arizona Adrenaline visited the Wyoming Cavalry on Friday evening still looking for their first win for the 2011 season. The Adrenaline started out strong in the first quarter, outscoring the Cavalry 6-2. However, in the second quarter the Cavalry came back, holding the Adrenaline scoreless while scoring 14 of their own points. Going into halftime, there was only a 10-point difference between the two teams meaning that the Adrenaline had a strong chance to earn their first 'w'. However, the offense and defense of the Cavalry were warmed up and ready to battle for the win. The Cavalry defense prevented any productivity for the Adrenaline by sacking the quarterback 5 times, getting 4 picks, and only allowing them to score 6 points in the second half as a whole. Not only did the Cavalry defense dominate, but the Cavalry offense had great success by scoring 37 points in the second half. The Wyoming Cavalry defeated the Arizona Adrenaline, 53-12.

Friday evening the Green Bay Blizzard went to the Wenatchee Valley Venom looking to earn another win for their current 5-game winning streak. The Blizzard was determined to win the game from the beginning, holding the Venom scoreless throughout the entire first half, while they scored 39 points. All in all, the Venom was not prepared to compete against the Blizzard; the Venom allowed 4 inceptions, 1 lost fumble, and 3 sacks. Though, both teams had very little productivity in rushing the ball, the Blizzard was able to find great momentum with keeping the ball in the air, QB Jameel Sewell passed for nearly 300 yards for 5 touchdowns. The Wenatchee Valley Venom was not able to make their first touchdown until the fourth quarter; however, by the close of the game, the Green Bay Blizzard scored 21 additional points sustaining their winning streak and increasing it to a six-game streak with a closing score of 60-6.

The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks hosted the Reading Express Saturday evening with the mindset of taking down the top seed in their division, Atlantic Division of the United Conference. The two teams were closely matched throughout the entire game where the greatest difference in score was 5 points in the fourth quarter. By halftime, there was only a 2-point difference with the Reading Express ahead. Both teams fought hard during the first half, meaning that they had to play even harder in the second half to be victorious. In the third quarter, the Steelhawks outscored the Express 10-6, giving them the 2 point advantage. Even though the Steelhawks had more offensive yardage, 2 sacks and one interception, the Express was able to overcome it by outscoring the Steelhawks 18-13 in the fourth quarter. The five-point difference in points earned in the fourth quarter was enough to give the Reading Express the win, 40-37.

The Omaha Beef hosted the Nebraska Danger on Saturday evening. From the beginning of the game, the Beef took the lead outscoring the Danger 10-3. However, the Danger realized in order to remain competitive they would have to play harder before halftime ensued. In the second quarter, the Danger registered enough points to give them the lead into halftime; the momentum of the second quarter appeared to continue through the third quarter leaving the score at 34-29 by the beginning of the fourth quarter. It became apparent in the fourth quarter that the Beef defense finally took a toll on the Danger offense with their 4 sacks and not allowing them to score more than 3 points in that final quarter. With the lack of productivity from the Nebraska Danger, the Omaha Beef were able to score 17 additional points to win the Saturday evening game, 46-37.

The West Texas Roughnecks stopped by the Amarillo Venom on Saturday evening. Both teams started out very slowly in the first quarter with the Roughnecks only scoring 3 points while the Venom remained scoreless. In the second quarter, the two teams picked up momentum with the score being 17-10, Roughnecks, by halftime. After halftime, the Roughnecks were able to implement a game plan which monopolized the game. The Roughneck defense grabbed 6 picks and 2 sacks, which stunted a great deal of the Venom's progress toward earning points. In the second half, the Venom was only able to score 13 points due to the dominating defense of the Roughnecks. While the Venom struggled, the Roughnecks thrived, scoring 49 more points, which allowed the West Texas Roughnecks to defeat the Amarillo Venom, 66-23.

One of the most intriguing match-ups for Week 10 was between the undefeated Colorado Ice and the Tri-Cities Fever, which is the top team in the Pacific Division of the Intense Conference. Throughout the entire game, both the Ice and Fever were neck-in-neck with the greatest point differential at 6 in the third quarter. The Fever led the Ice by 1 point in the first quarter; however, the Ice came back in the second quarter outscoring the Fever 24-17 into halftime. Entering the third quarter, the Ice had a strong opportunity to remain undefeated for the 2011 season. Unfortunately for the Ice, the Fever had other plans in mind. The Ice was not able to overcome Fever defense, which left the Ice scoreless in the third quarter and only allowed them to score 18 points in the fourth quarter. The 18 additional points scored by the Ice was no match for the 31 additional points scored by the Fever, which led to the defeat of the once-undefeated Colorado Ice, 48-42, Tri-Cities Fever.

On Saturday evening, the Wichita Wild visited the Allen Wranglers, hoping to gain another win for the franchise. The Wild and Wranglers were evenly matched up with a one point difference in total offensive yards, 2 interceptions for both teams, and the Wranglers only had one more sack than the Wild. By halftime, the Wranglers were leading the game, 42-31. In the third quarter, the Wild defense did not allow the Wranglers to score at all, while the offense was able to post up 10 more points for the Wild, bringing them within 1 point of the Wranglers. The Wild was not able to keep up or overcome the point proximity and were outscored by 11 points in the final quarter, which gave the win to the Allen Wranglers, 56-44.

The final game for Week 10 occurred on Saturday when the undefeated Sioux Falls Storm visited the Bricktown Brawlers. From start to finish, the Sioux Falls Storm showed great constancy in their performance, while the play of the Brawlers varied from quarter to quarter. The Brawlers were not able to overcome the strong, constant play of the Storm, who scored 21 points in each quarter. The Storm earned 386 total offensive yards, 5 interceptions, and 12 touchdowns, while the Brawlers were only able to get 177 total offensive yards, and 5 touchdowns. The Storm had only one goal in mind and that was to remain at the top, undefeated, which is what they did with a closing score of 84-30.
