We Have a Winner!
April 7, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Huntsville Stars News Release
For those that played along in our NCAA Pick 'Em Tournament, the winner is Jason Young, aka the Rainman. It was close but Jason eked out the championship. Jason wins fours tickets to an upcoming Stars game, an opportunity to throw out a ceremonial first pitch and a Stars prize package. Jason has already indicated that he wants his son to chunk out that pitch to create a childhood memory for him! Congratulations, Jason. My bracket was busted by the first round of games. Way to go, Florida State and Syracuse! Woo-Hoo!
But in the 'truth is stranger than fiction' category, Van McNeese of Amarillo, TX, had correctly picked both Michigan State and North Carolina in the final game, but alas, Poor Yorick, in between swigs of that nasty, watered down Plano Beer he drinks, he failed to pick a winner in the championship game and by the virtue of the rules in Section G, Paragraph 4, subparagraph 3a, the rules state, "in the event that a contestant doesn't complete his or her entire bracket he or she will forfeit all the Everlasting Gobstoppers in Wonkaland and be summarily discharged from said property, etc. etc. etc, ad nauseaum, pre-requisite, pro bono, ad litem, and all that legal mumbo jumbo...I say Good Day, Sir!"
In other words, Van, you screwed up. But, not to worry: send me your address and we'll get you a consolation prize so all your buddies will know you're not a total goofball, even though your boss emailed me and stated that because you (almost) completed your bracket on company time he's claiming half your prize.
Here's what's on tap for the first five games of the season against the Mobile BayBears later this week: Thursday, April 9th, 7:00 pm: The 25th season of Huntsville Stars baseball will begin with a Thirst-Aid Thursday presented by Bud Light. All 20-ounce Bud, Bud Lights (and now Amber Bocks) are only $2 and all 12-ounce Pepsi fountain products are only $1. We'll also have our Stars Last Fan Standing Contest. Get here early because we're going to start by 6:30 pm. Fans will be required to remain in one area touching a soon-to-be-named item. The last fan to do so will win 69 game tickets (one for every remaining home game). Eventually somebody is going to have to go to work or the restroom. Friday, April 10th, 7:00 pm: Post-game Fireworks courtesy of Pepsi. Fans can receive 1/2 price admission when presenting the bottle cap of any Pepsi product at the Box Office. That's a bottle cap from any size Pepsi product. Saturday, April 11th, 6:00 pm: Early arriving fans will receive a 2009 Huntsville Stars Schedule Magnet courtesy of Huntsville Place Apartments and Cliff Hill. It's also our Desperate Househusbands Night and this is the part you want to cut and paste to your buddies. The Huntsville Stars game on Saturday night will become Guys Night Out. We will be your alibi for the night. All you have to do is show up with your buddies, present your Honey-Do List at the Box Office and receive 1/2 off your admission. You must have your name and telephone number on your list. Once inside the gate, if you need to put an extra oomph! on your alibi, we'll take your photo on the dugout and email it to your significant other proving you're at the game. Then, you can use your conscience as your guide and leave the stadium if you wish - we're not going to know - however, for those that stick around, we're going to read the top Honey-Do Lists over the PA and the one that generates the biggest reaction from the crowd will win the grand prize package. Think about this: Late in April after our homestand ends, our staff will shut down the office one day and head over to your house and execute the elements on your Honey-Do List. You will then cut out of work an hour early, come home and we'll hand you some flowers and a $50 gift certificate for Conner's Steakhouse at Bridge Street. We'll scoot out the back door and you splash some artificial sweat on your face and shirt just before li'l ol' honey bunch comes in the front door. You give her the grand speech about how you take her for granted, yadda yadda yadda, dinner at Conner's, flowers, yadda yadda yadda...and Wham! You're king of the castle again. Now, if you choose not to attend this Saturday's game, go ahead and stay home, but you may as well return your manhood card because you've canceled all your rights and privileges to ever hanging with the guys ever again. Why, you might as well be a Cubs fan. Sunday, April 12th, 1:00 pm: Wow! This day is loaded for bear. First, present three wrappers from Lance Family Snack Foods and receive a buy-one-get-one-free ticket offer at the Box Office. Then, bring your baseball glove to the game and join us on-field for some pre-game throw-and-catch. You get to keep the ball, courtesy of Athens State University! Once the game gets going we'll have our weekly Super Soaker Sunday, presented by FOX 54. Now this Sunday might have some of you wanting to stay a bit warmer and avoiding the water; not too worry, join us on field after the game to run or walk the bases. Additionally, we'll give away 50 Chocolate Skunks (Homer the Pole Cat) to some lucky kids, thanks to our friends at the Chocolate Gallery on Whitesburg Drive. Monday, April 13th, 1:00 pm: It's getaway day for the Mobile BayBears, our first Business Person's Special and Military Monday, presented by NetwoRx. All military ID Card Holders and their guests will receive $1 admission every Monday in 2009. Just show your ID Card at the Box Office. This offer is open to all military ID Cards (Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, CS/GS, Family Member, Retiree, etc.) and is an excellent season-long promo for the military as a way of saying thanks for your service from NetwoRx.
That's just the first 1/2 of our opening home stand. It's going to be crazy and a wild ride, and if Mother Nature throws us a curveball we're going to just ride it out and laugh at her. It's time to sit down, strap yourself in and hold on, the 2009 Huntsville Stars season is here.
