Wave United Notes:

*The originally scheduled May 14 season opener v. Edmonton, postponed due to wet grounds at Uihlein Soccer Park, has been rescheduled for Thursday, August 19, 7:35 PM at Uihlein Soccer Park. Fans with tickets for the May 14 game may exchange them for that game, or any other 2004 Wave United regular season contest. Call the Wave Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283).

*Jim Larkin's shutout on 6/6 v. Syracuse was the 25th of his seven-year A-League career (91 games) and the 9th of his two-year Wave United career (25 games).

*The two shutouts suffered by Wave United 5/21 and 5/22 were the first back-to-back shutouts in team history. Wave United was shutout six times in 2003, three of which occurred at Uihlein Soccer Park.

*The scoreless draw on 5/22 with Minnesota was also the first tie in Wave United history. Wave United did not have any ties when it posted an A-League best 18-10-0 (54 pts.) record in 2003. Coach Art Kramer's team played just one overtime period the entire season, that coming in a 1-0 (OT) win at El Paso on 6/22/03.

*Minnesota's 1-0 aggregate goal victory over Wave United on 5/21 and 5/22 denied Milwaukee a chance to participate in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. It's the first time since the 2000 season that a Milwaukee A-League club has not qualified for the U.S. Open Cup

*Wave United's season-opening five-game winless streak tied the longest winless streak in Milwaukee A-League history. The '97 Rampage squad also went winless in five straight (all losses) from 5/25/97 thru 6/20/97.

*Four players have logged double duty with both Wave United and the U.S. National Futsal Team so far this season. Forwards Greg Howes and Johnny Torres, along with defender Pat White and goalkeeper Nick Vorberg all saw action in a CONCACAF Qualifier v. Honduras last month at U.S. Cellular Arena. The Keith Tozer coached U.S. squad defeated their Central American rivals 7-1 (5-1 on 5/18, 2-0 on 5/20) in the two-game total goal series to enable the U.S. to advance to the eight-team CONCACAF Futsal Championships July 23-31 in Costa Rica. The top two teams from the latter competition will qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Championship, which will be held in Chinese Taipei Nov. 21 – Dec. 5, 2004.

Last Week's Recap:

Fri. 6/4 @ Milwaukee Whitecaps 2, Wave United 1 Attendance – 2,214

Steve Kindel's goal in the 75th minute broke a 1-1 tie and propelled the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 2-1 A-League victory over Milwaukee Wave United Friday night (6/4) in front of 2,214 fans at Uihlein Soccer Park. Kindel's goal, his first of the season, came off an assist from second half substitute Kevin Harmse, who found Kindel at the left post after Harmse took a pass on the right side of the penalty area from John Sulentic.

Vancouver had taken the initial lead when Alfredo Valente scored in the 37th minute on a break away feed from David Xausa. Milwaukee evened the match when Chad Dombrowski scored in the 40th minute on a header from the middle of the box off a free kick served by Johnny Torres.

Whitecaps goalkeeper Alex Marques (1-1-0), who was making his first start of the season, posted only one save in recording the victory. Milwaukee counterpart Jim Larkin (0-4-1) had two saves in suffering another disappointing setback.

Sun. 6/6 @ Milwaukee Wave United 1, Salty Dogs 0 Attendance – 1,046

Johnny Torres' goal in the 36th minute proved to be the game-winner as Milwaukee Wave United, the Wave's A-League (outdoor) team defeated the Syracuse Salty Dogs 1-0 Sunday night (6/6) in front of 1,046 fans at Uihlein Soccer Park. The win, Milwaukee's first of the season, raised Wave United's record to 1-4-1 (4 points) while Syracuse, which suffered its third straight shutout loss, dropped to 3-3-2 (11 points). The Wave United conquest also evened the all-time series between the clubs at one-game-apiece as the two teams met for the first and only time this season.

Torres' goal, his second of the season, came off an assist from Nino Marcantonio. Marcantonio started the play along the left sideline when he recovered his initial pass for Greg Howes that was cleared away by a sliding Bennito Kemble. Marcantonio then touched it to the right for Torres, who dribbled into the penalty area before ripping a shot from 15 yards out that beat Salty Dogs goalkeeper Byron Foss to the top right corner of the goal.

Syracuse threatened to tie the score on several occasions, the most significant of which was Kupono Low's blast off the cross bar from the top left part of the penalty area in the 50th minute. Milwaukee also had an apparent goal scored by Todd Dusosky in the 72nd minute waived off due to an offside call.

Wave United ‘keeper Jim Larkin claimed the victory with two saves while Foss suffered the loss despite a fine effort in which he recorded six saves. It was Larkin's second shutout this season, and the 25th of his seven-year A-League career.
