Milwaukee Wave United News Release

(Milwaukee, WI) Milwaukee Wave United, the Wave's A-League (outdoor) team is getting ready for another challenging weekend as it prepares for games at Seattle (Friday, 5/28, 9:05 PM CDT at Seahawks Stadium) and Portland (Saturday, 5/29, 9:05 PM at PGE Park) this upcoming weekend. Coach Art Kramer's team enters this weekend's action at 0-1-1 (1 pt.) following its opening weekend results against the arch-rival Minnesota Thunder. Milwaukee kicked-off the regular season by suffering a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Thunder Friday (5/21) in St. Paul before playing to a scoreless draw with Minnesota the following night (5/22) in the rain-soaked home opener at Uihlein Soccer Park.

The Sounders and Timbers are both coming off significant wins this past weekend. Seattle (1-2-1, 4 pts.) disposed of the Calgary Mustangs 5-0 yesterday (5/23) at Seahawks Stadium while Portland (4-0-0, 12 pts.) took care of the Whitecaps 3-1 last night in Vancouver. Both games this weekend, like all other Wave United contests, can be heard live on 540 AM, WRRD ("The Word") with air time for each broadcast approximately 20 minutes prior to kick-off (8:45 PM CDT both nights.)

Milwaukee's next home game is Friday, June 4, 7:05 PM when it hosts the Vancouver Whitecaps at Uihlein Soccer Park. That will be another "Fireworks Friday" at Uihlein presented by Cousins Subs, Lazer 103, and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Fans can pick up a buy-one-get-one-free ticket voucher at all participating Cousins Subs locations. Friday, June 4 is also the rescheduled date for the VIP Tent Party prior to the game (5:30 – 7 PM). Wave United Notes:

*The originally scheduled May 14 season opener v. Edmonton, postponed due to wet grounds at Uihlein Soccer Park, has still not been rescheduled. An announcement regarding the new date is expected in the near future.

*Jim Larkin's shutout on 5/22 v. Minnesota was the 24th of his seven-year A-League career (87 games) and the 8th of his two-year Wave United career (21 games). Larkin is now 34-47-5 for his A-League career, and 10-10-1 in his Wave United career.

*The two shutouts suffered by Wave United were the first back-to-back shutouts in team history. Wave United was shutout six times in 2003, three of which occurred at Uihlein Soccer Park.

*Saturday's (5/22) home opener was switched from the Stadium Field to Pat Jones Field due to unplayable conditions on the former pitch. The scoreless draw v. Minnesota broke Wave United's three-game winning streak on the PJF dating back to 2003 although Milwaukee did keep its defensive scoreless steak intact on the alternate pitch (Wave U. outscored its opponents 9-0 at PJF in 2003).

*Saturday's (5/22) scoreless draw with Minnesota was also the first tie in Wave United history. Ironically, Milwaukee would have experienced its first draw the night before (5/21) against the Thunder in St. Paul except for a last-second goal by Minnesota's Chris Vorenkamp in the final minute of overtime. Wave United did not have any ties when it posted an A-League best 18-10-0 (54 pts.) record in 2003. Coach Art Kramer's team played just one overtime period the entire season, that coming in a 1-0 (OT) win at El Paso on 6/22/03.

*Minnesota's 1-0 aggregate goal victory over Wave United (5/21 and 5/22) denied Milwaukee a chance to participate in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. It's the first time since the 2000 season that a Milwaukee A-League club has not qualified for the U.S. Open Cup.

*Five players had double duty with both Wave United and the U.S. National Futsal Team last week. Forwards Greg Howes and Johnny Torres, along with defenders Pat White, Lovelace Ackah, and goalkeeper Nick Vorberg worked out with both teams, with Howes, Torres, White, and Vorberg all seeing action in the two-game, total goal series v. Honduras at U.S. Cellular Arena. The Keith Tozer coached U.S. squad defeated Honduras 7-1 (5-1 on 5/18, 2-0 on 5/20) in the CONCACAF Qualifier at U.S. Cellular Arena to enable the U.S. to advance to the eight-team CONCACAF Futsal Championships July 23-31 in Costa Rica. The top two teams from the latter competition will qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Championship, which will be held in Chinese Taipei Nov. 21 – Dec. 5, 2004.

Last Week's Recap:

Fri. 5/21 @ Minnesota Thunder 1, Wave United 0 (OT) Attendance – 1,507

Chris Vorenkamp's goal in the final seconds of overtime propelled the Minnesota Thunder to a 1-0 win over Wave United in Milwaukee's 2004 A-League regular season opener Friday night (5/21) at James Griffin Stadium in St. Paul, MN. Vorenkamp scored on a turning right-footer from the middle of the penalty area after his initial header off a corner kick from teammate Marco Ferruzzi was blocked by Milwaukee defender Joe Hammes.

Until that point, neither team had manufactured many good scoring chances. Wave United's best chance came in the 7th minute when midfielder Matt Schmidt blasted a shot over the goal from 12 yards out on a ball laid back to him by forward Nick Walls. Minnesota, which out-shot Milwaukee 9-0 in the second half, created two good chances inside the penalty area (Marshall Morehead, John Menyongar) that were turned away by Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin.

Joe Warren posted the shutout for Minnesota with five saves, including a good stop of a free kick attempt from 20 yards out by David Wagenfuhr in the second overtime period. Larkin finished with five saves for Milwaukee.

Sat. 5/22 @ Milwaukee Wave United 0, Thunder 0 (OT) Attendance – 1,378

Wave United capped off its opening weekend against the arch-rival Minnesota Thunder with a 0-0 tie against the Thunder in Milwaukee's home opener Saturday night (5/22) at Uihlein Soccer Park. The two teams battled to the scoreless draw in soggy conditions on the Pat Jones Field before a paid crowd of 1,378. The result moved Milwaukee's record to 0-1-1 (1 point) while Minnesota had its mark go to 3-1-2 (11 points).

Similar to the previous night's game in Minnesota, neither team manufactured many quality scoring chances. The Thunder's best chance came early in the second half on a sliding right footer from eight yards out by Chris Vorenkamp (who had scored the game-winner at the end of overtime on Friday night) that was stopped on a diving save near the right post by Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin. Milwaukee's best opportunity came late in the second half when Kevin Burk won the ball from Minnesota ‘keeper Joe Warren at the top of the penalty area only to have his turning 15-yard attempt headed away from the goal by Thunder defender Dustin Branan. Wave United midfielder Joe Hammes had the only other near-miss in the contest, a blast from 45 yards away in the 52nd minute that beat Warren but clanged off the right post.

Larkin (7 saves) recorded his first shutout of the season while Warren (4 saves) registered his fifth. Coupled with the Thunder's 1-0 victory in St. Paul the previous night (5/21), Minnesota claimed the two-game total goal series 1-0 thus denying Wave United's bid to secure a spot in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. (The Thunder had already clinched an automatic bid on the basis of its runner-up finish in the 2003 A-League playoffs.)
