Sparked by goals from Greg Howes and Matt Schmidt, not to mention excellent team defense, Milwaukee Wave United defeated the El Paso Patriots 2-0 Friday night (7/25) at Uihlein Soccer Park. Howes scored his fourth goal of the season from the middle of the penalty area off a left wing cross from Troy Dusosky. Dusosky intercepted a pass at midfield then continued down the left wing until finding Howes on a run to the middle of the box. Howes' one-time half-volley beat El Paso goalkeeper Scott Alexander just underneath the crossbar.
Schmidt added his first of the year in the 61st minute after a Milwaukee build up that saw five players get a touch around the perimeter of the penalty area. Dino Delevski found Schmidt on the left side and the latter blasted a deflected shot past Alexander to make it 2-0.
The Patriots, who had the benefit of a 20 MPH wind at their backs in the second half - the same which aided Milwaukee in the first half - maintained constant pressure in the attacking zone throughout the latter 45 minutes. However, a solid Wave United defense anchored by goalkeeper Jim Larkin kept El Paso off the board. Larkin improved to 7-8-0 on the season with his sixth shutout of the campaign.

Forward Greg Howes continued his recent hot streak with a pair of goals as Milwaukee Wave United made it a weekend sweep of the El Paso Patriots with a 5-1 win Sunday afternoon (7/27) at Uihlein Soccer Park. The five goals scored was a season high for Wave United as Art Kramer's team won its third consecutive A-League contest, and its fourth straight overall. Wave United also won its fourth consecutive regular season home game as it improved to 6-3-0 at Uihlein, and 10-8-0 (30 points) for the 2003 campaign. El Paso, which lost for the fifth time in six games, dropped to 2-7-1 on the road, and 8-12-2 (26 points) overall. Milwaukee also wrapped up the season series against the Patriots winning three-of-four scheduled contests.
Rookie forward Nick Walls got Milwaukee rolling in the 11th minute when he took a pass down the right wing from Howes, dribbled around a defender and then slotted a left foot shot from 10 yards out past El Paso goalkeeper Scott Alexander. Walls' contributions would be short-lived, however, as he was red-carded along with El Paso midfielder Freddy Jaurez following an altercation between the two in the 20th minute.
Howes scored his first of the game in the 41st minute as he took a touch from Matt Schmidt and dribbled past a defender in the box to score from 12 yards out. Including Open Cup competition, it marked the fourth straight match that Howes has scored at least one goal.
El Paso turned up the offensive pressure in the second half and was rewarded when Mike Griego scored a sliding goal at the far post off a chip from second half substitute Omar Mora. Wave United quickly seized back the momentum when Howes scored again from 15 yards out off a nice one-two with Todd Dusosky.
Rookie defender Chad Dombrowski (85th minute) and forward Anthony Maher (90th) wrapped up the scoring with a pair of late goals, with midfielder John Ball assisting on both. Goalkeeper Jeff Richey won his third games in three starts this season (his fifth in five decisions over the last two campaigns) as registered six saves.
Notes: *Goalkeeper Jim Larkin posted his sixth shutout of the season in Friday's (7/25) 2-0 win over El Paso. He moved past former Rampage goalkeeper Dan Green into third on Milwaukee's all-time A-League shutout list
*Including Wednesday's (7/23) Open Cup game v. the Milwaukee Bavarians, forward Greg Howes has now scored at least one goal in four straight games, a team high for this season.
*Forward Digital Takawira's goal on 7/23 v. the Bavarians was his first of the season.
*Midfielder Steve Bernal was forced to leave Wednesday's match (7/23) v. the Bavarians with a left knee injury sustained in the 78th minute. He has not played since.
*Milwaukee's 3-2 win @ Cin on 7/19 was the 100th regular season victory in Milwaukee A-League History (1997-Present)
*Rookie defender Joe Hammes (Cedarburg, WI / St. Louis U.), who did not play in the season opener v. Min on 5/16, has played every minute of every game (1533 minutes) since. He tops the club in minutes played followed by Matt Schmidt (1520) and Troy Dusosky (1501).
