Dino Delevski's goal on a tough angle shot from 15 yards out in the 31st minute was the only tally Milwaukee needed as it hung on to defeat the Thunder 1-0 at Eastview H.S. in Apple Valley, MN. Delevski converted a pass from John Ball as he slipped a bouncer past Minnesota goalkeeper Joe Warren from the left side of the penalty area just a few feet from the end line. Meanwhile, Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin and the Milwaukee defense held off a determined second-half Minnesota attack that manufactured 11 shots. Larkin's best save came in the 70th minute as he robbed Johnny Menyongar at the far post from 10 yards out on a one-time volley off a cross from Don Gramenz. Wave United is now 2-1-0 v. the Thunder this season, with both wins coming in Minnesota.
Forced to play on the adjacent Pat Jones Field due to unplayable conditions on the waterlogged Stadium Field, Wave United made itself right at home at it jumped on Portland for four first half tallies in a 4-0 win over the Timbers. Todd Dusosky began the scoring parade as he redirected a re-start pass from Dino Delevski right in front of the goal for his third of the season. Rookie Chad Dombrowski made it 2-0 on his first professional goal, a 25-yard blast of a re-directed touch by Dusosky off another free kick by Delevski. Delevski then added a pair of goals himself in the 33rd and 36th minutes, blasting each home from the middle of the box on assists by Matt Schmidt and John Ball, respectively. Goalkeeper Jim Larkin posted his second shutout in as many games by making three saves as the Wave United defense limited the number of quality chances for the Portland attack. Sunday's win marked the first time a Milwaukee squad had defeated Portland in three lifetime trips to the Brew City.
Notes: *Dino Delevski became the first multiple-goal scorer in Wave United history with his two tallies on 6/8 v. Portland. Delevski, who is in his first professional outdoor season, leads Milwaukee in scoring with ten points (four goals and two assists).
*Midfielder Matt Schmidt recorded his first point of the season when he assisted on Delevski's first goal on 6/8 v. Portland. Schmidt, goalkeeper Jim Larkin, and defender Jeremy Aldrich have played every minute so far this season.
*Goalkeeper Jim Larkin is among the A-League leaders in shutouts (three) and lowest GAA (1.00). He now has 19 shutouts in 72 career A-League regular season games.
*Rookie defender Steve Lawrence (Brookfield, WI / Marquette University) made his professional debut for Wave United on 6/7 @ Minnesota. Lawrence, who along with Matt Schmidt and Joe Hammes played for current Wave United Assistant Coach Bob Spielmann at Milwaukee Marquette High School, played all 90 minutes of both games against Minnesota and Portland.
*Defender Chad Dombrowski (West Allis, WI / UW â Milwaukee), who scored his first professional goal on 6/8 v. Portland, is currently one of three rookie starters (along with Lawrence and Hammes) on Milwaukee's back line. Left back Troy Dusosky is the lone veteran defender in Milwaukee's 4-4-2 alignment, which was unveiled by Wave United this past weekend after the team began the season in a 3-5-2 configuration. Former central defender Jeremy Aldrich has been moved up as the central defensive midfielder in the new alignment.
*Defender Matt Bobo was released prior to the 6/7 game @ Minnesota. The 26-year old Des Moines, IA native, who played college ball at Eastern Illinois, was in his third season with Milwaukee. In 29 career A-League regular season appearances, Bobo had four goals and two assists for ten points. He started three games (225 minutes) this season with no points, two shots, and two fouls.
