Wave United Signs Segovia to Three-Year Contract
May 1, 2003 - A-League (A-League)
Milwaukee Wave United News Release
(Milwaukee, WI) Milwaukee Wave United, the Wave's A-League (outdoor) team announced today that it has signed forward / midfielder Keith Segovia to a three-year contract beginning with the 2003 A-League campaign. The 24-year old Segovia, who spent the past pre-season with the Wave indoor squad will be making his professional debut with Wave United.
A native of Stamford, CT, the 5-10, 155 lb. Segovia began his collegiate career at West Florida before transferring to Southern Connecticut State University. He went on to become a three-year starter at SCSU, where he helped the Owls win the 1999 NCAA Division II championship during his sophomore season. He had his best individual season as a senior in 2001, when he tallied seven goals and thirteen assists (27 points) to help SCSU finish 17-4-2. All told for his three seasons at SCSU, Segovia appeared in 59 games, scoring 15 goals with 22 assists for 52 points.
"It's good to be back in Milwaukee," said Segovia, who passed up a chance to sign with the Wave indoor team last fall to explore other options. "There are a lot of good players in this organization that can help me step up my game and I'm looking forward to a great year."
Said Wave / Wave United Vice-President of Operations Keith Tozer, "When Keith first appeared at our indoor pre-season camp, we felt he had a lot of raw ability, very good speed, and the ability to go at people. His need to return to the (Major League Soccer) MetroStars kept him from playing indoor, but we're glad to have such a good young player for our outdoor team."
Wave United Coach Art Kramer echoed Tozer's sentiments.
"Keith is a young player who we feel has the potential to develop and bring his game to the next level," said Kramer. "His strengths are winning balls at midfield and decision making. He also has a powerful shot from the right side."
Wave United opens its first A-League season on Friday, May 16, 7:05 PM when it hosts the Minnesota Thunder at Uihlein Soccer Park. Art Kramer's team will also host the defending MLS champion Los Angeles Galaxy in an exhibition match on Sunday, May 18, 4:05 PM at Uihlein.
