February 20, 2003 - A-League (A-League)
Milwaukee Wave United News Release
(Milwaukee, WI) Milwaukee Wave United, the Wave's outdoor team in the USL A-League announced today that it has signed forward Anthony Maher to a two-year contract beginning with the upcoming 2003 season. The 23 year-old Maher (pronounced "mayer") will be on loan from the Major Indoor Soccer League's Cleveland Force, the club he is playing for during the current indoor season. In 27 games this season with the Force, Maher has tallied eight goals and six assists for 22 points.
The New Jersey native, who played college ball at Mercyhurst College (Erie, PA) has been a noteworthy goal scorer with each of his previous outdoor teams. He was the nation's second leading NCAA Division II scorer with 63 points (24 goals, 15 assists) his senior year at Mercyhurst (2001 season) before moving on to play for the Wilmington Hammerheads of the D3 Pro League in 2002. At Wilmington, Maher topped the club with 38 points (15 goals, 8 assists) placing him third on the D3 Pro League scoring list.
"He should be a good fit for the first year of Wave United," said Vice-President of Soccer Operations Keith Tozer. "He has shown the ability to score goals as both a collegiate and professional player and also seems to have a very good professional disposition. I was planning on drafting Anthony last year in the MISL draft before Cleveland selected him, so we've been interested in him for quite some time."
Maher will report for preseason training shortly after the conclusion of Cleveland's 2002-03 season. He becomes the second player officially signed by Wave United, joining defender Jeremy Aldrich who inked a three-year indoor / outdoor contract last week.
Wave United, which replaces the Milwaukee Rampage as Wisconsin's outdoor professional soccer team, will kick-off its inaugural season on May 16 at 7:05 PM versus the Minnesota Thunder at Uihlein Soccer Park located at 7101 W. Good Hope Rd. on Milwaukee's northwest side. (Uihlein Soccer Park was the former home of the Rampage from 1995-2000.)
