MILWAUKEE (March 2, 2008) -- A 10-point outburst in the game's first six minutes carried the Milwaukee Wave to a 17-8 victory over the California Cougars on Sunday at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

Giuliano Oliviero slotted a 3-pointer just 2:08 into the game to get things started. Marcelo Fontana and Anthony Maher added 2-pointers, then Marcio Leite hit another 3-pointer with 9:08 still remaining in the first quarter to make it 10-0.

The lead grew as high as 13 points in the second half as the Wave (16-7) took a half-game lead over Detroit (15-7) in the MISL standings.

"The first period has not been one of our better periods statistically," said Wave head coach Keith Tozer. "So it was nice to come out and get a 10-0 lead."

Warren Ukah and Troy Dusosky tallied third-period goals to make it 17-4. Troy scored on a restart, making a deft first touch to deke a defender before firing a shot into the far corner.

California (8-15) added a couple of goals late to close the gap.

Marcos Chantel drew a red card in the first quarter after an altercation with the Wave's Adam West. West received a blue card for striking, then Chantel retaliated and was shown the red card. He will have to miss the Cougars' next match.

Greg Howes regained the MISL scoring lead with a 3-point goal and three assists, giving him 89 points. Marcio Leite picked up four points with an assist to go with his 3-pointer.

"The big thing we wanted to do today was hold serve at home, get a win and get ready for Orlando," Tozer said.

The Wave's homestand continues next Sunday at 2 p.m. with the 16th annual Cousins Subs Mascot Game at halftime with the Wave's contest with the Orlando Sharks. Fans can pre-order the popular Family-4 Pack, with four tickets, four sodas and four hot dogs for just $60. Call (414) 224-9283 to order.
