New Jersey Ironmen News Release
NEWARK, NJ (Sunday, March 2, 2008) - The New Jersey Ironmen (12-10) grabbed their second straight win today, knocking off the expansion Orlando Sharks (3-21) by a count of 27-5 at Prudential Center. Former New York Cosmos midfielder Vladislav "Bogie" Bogicevic got the action started following the cermonial first kick to New Jersey goalkeeper Tony Meola in a game that saw Ironmen Head Coach Omid Namazi don the Maroon and Mandarin on his back. In the first frame, the former MISL Defender of the Year logged his first minutes as a player since suiting up for one game with the St. Louis Steamers during the 2005-06 season. 16 seconds into the game, New Jersey forward Shaun David netted the first points of the afternoon when he scored an unassisted two-point tally. Dizzy Antoniuk hooked up Lazo Alavanja at 3:03, and Dizzy booted home a two-pointer of his own at 5:58 off a feed from Brazilian forward Freddy Moojen. The Ironmen made it 8-0 at 6:45 when David sent home his second goal of the day, and the Antoniuk to Alavanja duo struck again with 33 ticks left in the opening quarter. New Jersey rode a 10-0 advantage heading into the second stanza.
At 9:12 of the second period, Namazi put himself in the stat book when he set up a Donny Gray goal, and the hometown team led 12-0. David then nailed the third goal of an early hat trick at 9:56 when he drilled a three-point bomb from behind the yellow marking line, giving his team a 15-0 halftime lead. Alavanja registered the assist.
Ironmen defender Ibrahim Kante opened the second half scoring by blasting a restart three-point goal in the first minute of the third quarter, and Moojen put in an unassisted tally at 4:24 to give the Ironmen a 20-0 advantage. Namazi then picked up his second assist of the contest when he set up a John Krause two-pointer at 6:49. New Jersey finally saw their 22-0 run come to an end when Orlando midfielder Miki Djerisilo scored a three-pointer off a Shawn Boney assist with 0.4 seconds left in the third frame.
Shark forward Damien Pottinger made it 22-5 at 6:54 of the fourth period, but Moojen hit a three-pointer at 12:49 off an Alavanja feed. The long-range score was followed up by a Lé to Antoniuk goal in the final minute, hanging the final score up in favor of the hometown Ironmen, 27-5.
The 27 points marked a season high for the entire MISL this season, as did the 22-point win. David led all scorers with seven points, and Meola recorded 11 saves in net for the Ironmen. New Jersey now heads out west for a two-game swing in Monterrey and California before returning to Newark on March 15th to host the Chicago Storm.
