Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Weekend Recap

The Black Hawks suffered a 6-3 home loss to the Green Bay Gamblers Friday. Alex Kile scored twice for the visitors, while Adam Wilcox made 27 saves. Black Hawks goals from Tyler Zepeda, Jamie Hill, and Vince Hinostroza kept the game close before a pair of empty net scores in the final minute. Saturday, Waterloo beat the USHL's top goalie Alex Lyon with four of 37 shots in a 4-2 victory over the Omaha Lancers. Hinostroza, Zepeda, Ryan Papa, and Aaron Pearce found the net. The Hawks allowed two shorthanded goals.

Five-on-Three

The final Black Hawks goal Saturday was recorded by Aaron Pearce during a five-on-three power play. The marker made Waterloo 1-for-2 during two-man advantage opportunities this season. Coincidentally, their other chance was also against the Lancers on September 30th. That night, the Hawks turned away the only two-man disadvantage they have faced. Last season, the Hawks scored during 10-of-28 five-on-three's.

Zepeda Celebrates Centennial

Tyler Zepeda scored the go-ahead goal Saturday during his 100th USHL regular season game. The forward from Woodbury, Minnesota, made his league debut as an affiliate player on November 7, 2008. The following year, injuries limited Zepeda to 37 appearances, but last season he led the Black Hawks with 31 points. During 100 career games, he has 22 goals and 22 assists.

Western Wins, Eastern Opponents

The Hawks' win Saturday moves their record to 3-0-1 versus the teams they are battling for Western Conference supremacy. Waterloo won't see much of the West in the coming weeks. The Black Hawks' next eleven games are all against Eastern Conference foes. The Hawks will not face another team from the Western Conference until December 3rd, when they meet the Omaha Lancers for the third time this season.

Hectic Hockey

On the road this weekend, Waterloo will play three games in three days, visiting the Indiana Ice and the Muskegon Lumberjacks. The Hawks will become much more familiar with the three-in-three challenge during the latter part of the season, facing similar scheduling three times in February and March. Additionally, this weekend's games represent the Hawks' only trips to Pepsi Coliseum and Walker Arena this season.
