Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Replay Weekend
The Black Hawks' last two opponents are also the Hawks' next two opponents. Last Saturday, the Lincoln Stars topped Waterloo, 8-5; the Hawks responded with a 2-1 victory Tuesday against the Sioux City Musketeers. This Friday, Waterloo visits Lincoln (7:35 p.m.) and then moves on to Sioux City Saturday (7:05 p.m.). The game against the Stars will complete this year's regular season series with Lincoln. Meanwhile, Sioux City will travel to Young Arena twice more during the final six weeks of the 2017/18 schedule. The Hawks are seeking their 15th road win of the season this weekend; during P.K. O'Handley's first 15 seasons with the club, Waterloo reached that threshold four times (2016/17, 2013/14, 2012/13, and 2007/08).
Scoring Race
As the last full month of the 2017/18 schedule begins, the Black Hawks' Jackson Cates is among the USHL's most prolific scorers. Cates is currently tied with Filip Suchy (Omaha Lancers) one point short of Anthony Del Gaizo's (Muskegon Lumberjacks) pace-setting total of 52. The same three players are also the league's top goal scorers. Del Gaizo's 32 currently trump Cates' 28; Suchy has 26.
Making Your Points
The Black Hawks have played 24 of 32 scheduled games against opponents from the USHL Western Conference. Waterloo owns a 15-7-2 record in those games, and a win on either Friday or Saturday would assure the Hawks a .500 or better record versus their Western rivals. Waterloo's points percentage from conference games comes in at .667, which ranks second only to the conference-leading Omaha Lancers at .677. This weekend's opponents have each earned approximately half of the points possible from conference games: Lincoln - .500, Sioux City .481.
Trivigno Not Trivial
Among the Hawks' eight-highest scorers, only Bobby Trivigno is in his first USHL season. Trivigno scored his tenth goal of the season Tuesday to boost Waterloo past Sioux City. He also has 16 assists and currently stands fifth in team points (26). The tie-breaking tally versus the Musketeers was Trivigno's third game-winner of the year. He is tied for second on the team in shots on goal (134) and ranks sixth in plus/minus margin (+6).
Weekly Recap
A pair of 2-1 wins helped the Black Hawks reclaim sole control of second place in the USHL Western Conference. The victories came Friday versus the Des Moines Buccaneers and Tuesday against Sioux City. In between, Lincoln outdistanced Waterloo, 8-5 on Saturday. Jackson Cates scored in all three games, including the game-winner on Friday and a hat trick on Saturday. Cates' goal Tuesday tied the score at 1-1 in the third.
