Waterloo Black Hawks Phase I 2024 USHL Draft Results

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - Phase I of the 2024 United States Hockey League Draft found the Waterloo Black Hawks looking from coast to coast for a crop of new players on Monday.

Waterloo's picks came from places as geographically diverse as Irvine, California in the west, Riverside, Connecticut in the east, Minocqua, Wisconsin in the north and Odessa, Florida in the south. Irvine native Noah Davidson led the group as the Hawks' first round selection. The forward spent last season skating for Shattuck-St. Mary's 16U team. Davidson was the youngest player on a squad which went 47-7-3 and reached USA Hockey's National Tournament for their age group. Despite his relative youth, Davidson was the fourth-leading scorer for his team, producing 29 goals and 32 assists in 54 Sabres' games.

USA Hockey Nationals experience was a common characteristic for Monday's draft class. Five other Hawks prospects skated during the final week of 15 Only games. That includes forward Owen DeGraff (Odessa), who helped the Long Island Gulls to finish as the national runners-up. Goalie Jacoby Weiner (Riverside) was one of only five goalies to record a shutout during the 31-game event. Forward Caden Harvey and defensemen Leo Laschon both represented the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 15s; the Penguins were the only team, and Pennsylvania was the only state from which Waterloo chose two players on Monday. Jaxon Williams rounded out the players who appeared in the 15 Only Nationals, scoring two of the four goals recorded by the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes.

Last spring, the Black Hawks chose Landon Nycz during Phase I of the 2023 USHL Draft. The rookie defenseman appeared in 52 Waterloo games, making the most immediate impact of any Hawks 2023 selection. Nycz came from the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies, and Monday, Waterloo picked another defenseman from the same program: Nick Bogas.

Most players chosen on Monday will have opportunities to become fulltime Hawks during future seasons. Coming up on Tuesday during Phase II of the 2024 USHL Draft, Waterloo and the league's other teams will make selections geared primarily toward building the 2024/25 roster.
