Washington Wild Things News Release
CRESTWOOD, IL- The Washington Wild Things were able to take Thursday night's rubber match versus the Windy City Thunderbolts after posting three runs in the top of the ninth to win 5-4. Tim Giel (2-3) was credited with the win for the Wild Things, while the Thunderbolt's James Jones (0-3) suffered the loss. Jonathan Kountis earned the save.
Washington was able to take an early lead over Windy City thanks to a David Popkins solo home run, in the top of the second inning. For Popkins, it was his division leading 13th home run of the season. However, the Thunderbolts would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth when Coco Johnson scored after Jonathan Garcia grounded into a double play.
Windy City then proceeded to take the lead during the bottom of the sixth when Ryan Deitrich scored on a passed ball. Washington was able to answer quickly off of the feet of Matt Ford, who stole home in the top of the seventh. That lead, however would not stand for long, as the Thunderbolts' Austin Gallagher scored on a fielding error in the bottom of the inning. Jacob Tanis also scored for Windy City in the at bat, putting the Thunderbolts ahead by two.
In their last at-bat, Washington produced a ton of clutch offense, starting with a Popkins walk and followed up by a single from Ford. Maxx Garrett would then single in both runs to tie the game 4-4 and eventually advance to third on a Windy City error. A sacrifice flyout from Andrew Heck plated Garrett, giving the Wild Things a 5-4 advantage late in the contest. A perfect closing performance from Kountis cemented the victory.
Washington will stay on the road until the all-star break, with their next destination being a three-game series against the Aviators of Rockford beginning Friday, July 10 at 8:05 p.m. EST. Fans can listen to the action with Randy Gore on WJPA 95.3 FM or on msasports.net/broadcasts.
