Washington Stealth Raises Awareness for Men's Health with Movember

October 31, 2011 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Washington Stealth News Release

Everett, Wash. - The Washington Stealth has joined Movember to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. Stealth players and staff are taking part in the month-long event and ask that friends and fans of the team get involved as well.

Starting on November 1st, male participants (known as "Mo Bros") begin with a clean-shave face and grow only a mustache (aka "Mo") throughout the month of November. Female participants (known as "Mo Sistas") are asked to occasionally don a fake "Mo" to spread awareness. All participants then register for the Washington Stealth team on the Movember website, and encourage friends and family to donate to the cause.

That cause is Men's Health Awareness. Studies show that one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and 240,890 men will be diagnosed with the disease over the next year. Prostate cancer is over 90% curable if detected and treated in its early stages. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among American males between 15 and 34 years of age, and the rate of testicular cancer has grown by 60% over the past 35 years.

The funds raised in the US support prostate and testicular cancer, as well as other cancers that affect men. The funds raised are directed to programs run directly by Movember and our men's health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG, the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Together, the three channels work together to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world-class programs in line with Movember's strategic goals in the areas of awareness and education, survivorship and research. In 2010, over 64,500 US Mo Bros and Mo Sistas got on board, raising $7.5 million USD.

The Stealth will be rewarding fans that participate in the Movember event. Fans that raise $100 will be able to choose from a variety of Stealth prizes and fans that raise $500 will receive a Stealth sweatshirt. The fan that raises the most money will receive a $200 gift certificate to be used on Stealth merchandise. The Stealth will also be running Movember contests on the team Facebook page to give participants even more chances to win Stealth prizes during Movember.
