Washington Stealth Defenseman McElroy Named Sticks-2-Schools Instructor

Everett, Wash. - Sticks-2-Schools, the non-profit partner organization of the National Lacrosse League's Washington Stealth, has announced that Stealth defensemen Chris McElroy will take on the role of program instructor in the organization's second year in Washington. McElroy is an eight-year NLL vet and played a major role in the community department during his time as a member of the Edmonton Rush.

Sticks-2-Schools is a nonprofit, public benefit corporation, organized under the 501(c)3 section of the tax code, that helps fight childhood obesity by motivating youth to increase their level of physical activity. The program donates lacrosse equipment, curriculum guides and instruction from Stealth players at no cost to the schools.

The program made its debut in Washington last spring with visits to numerous schools in the Puget Sound region. McElroy, who enters his second season with the Stealth in 2012, takes over the reigns as program instructor and is eager to reach out to as many children as possible.

"I'm extremely excited to be a part of Sticks-2-Schools," said McElroy. "It's important to promote an active and healthy lifestyle to children and by using lacrosse, we are engaging kids in a new and fun activity that they will be excited to learn."

McElroy is no stranger to working in the community. Prior to joining the Stealth, the All-Star defenseman represented the Edmonton Rush throughout the city in community appearances at various charities, children's hospitals and schools.

"It was a very rewarding experience being so closely involved in the Edmonton community, and I look forward to being a part of the community here in Washington," McElroy added. "Lacrosse and community involvement are two things I am very passionate about. Combining the two is a dream come true."

On the floor, McElroy has established himself as one of the NLL's top defensemen, earning All-Star honors in 2008 as a member of the Rush. He was instrumental in the Stealth's second straight Western Division title in 2011, as part of a Stealth defense that allowed just eight goals per game in the postseason.

In order to dedicate more of his time to Sticks-2-Schools, McElroy has made the move to Washington. He's already played a part in the fundraising efforts for the organization, participating in an event on October 16 that raised enough money to bring Sticks-2-Schools to another school on the waiting list.

Currently, there are over 80 schools on the Sticks-2-Schools waiting list. Fundraising is ongoing in an attempt to bring the program to as many schools as possible.
