Traverse City North Stars News Release
FLINT - The Michigan Warriors broke open a 2-2 deadlock in the third period on Saturday evening, scoring twice in the final half of the frame and holding off the Traverse City North Stars for a 4-2 victory at Perani Arena.
Despite surrendering the go-ahead and insurance goals late in the third period, Stars head coach Chad Fournier says the game's first ten minutes was a harbinger of the final score.
"I don't think our effort was particularly strong tonight, especially in the early going," explained Fournier, whose team is off for the next two weeks for a holiday respite. "We talked about not going on Christmas break before Christmas break - and we were on Christmas break in those first 10 minutes."
The Warriors scored 28 seconds into the contest, and made it 2-0 at the 11:51 mark before Dean Burggrabe (Marquette, MI/Compuware U18) cut the Stars' deficit in half with 6:06 to go before the intermission. Alexander Taulien (Crystal Lake, IL/TC North Stars NAHL) assisted.
After a scoreless second period, Seth Adams (Big Rapids, MI/Big Rapids HS/Ferris State) tied the game on an unassisted tally - his second in as many games - before the hosts closed it out with a pair of scores down the stretch.
"They (Michigan) wanted to win this game more, and they have another game tomorrow so they hadn't checked out yet. We had checked out that first period. We played better after that stretch, but we didn't have enough guys that wanted to work hard. We didn't get enough pucks to the net."
Kyle Laslo (Fenton, MI/Osoyoos KIJHL) made 21 saves for the North Stars, who outshot Michigan by a 31-25 margin.
After a 13-day holiday hiatus from game action, Traverse City (14-7-4) will travel to Jamestown, N.Y. for the first time for New Year's weekend. The Stars face off against the Ironmen (formerly Motor City Metal Jackets) in a Dec. 30-Jan. 1 series.
