Utah Warriors News Release
WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH â The Utah Warriors got their first taste of action for the 2004 season with a convincing 42-15 defeat of the UIFL All-Stars in the first annual Black & Gold Game. The All-Stars led the game 15-13 at the half, but didn't score a point in the second half while allowing 29 to the Warriors.
Warriors quarterback Cole Cooper started the game 4-of-6 for 28 yards, but struggled the rest of the first half, finishing the game 4-for-10 with three interceptions. Doug Smith played the second half, finishing 6-for-10 with 84 yards and one touchdown. The touchdown came with 1:53 left in the game on a 26-yard pass to Cody Jamison. Smith got hit as he released the pass and Jamison made the catch off a deflection as he banged into the end zone wall. "Coach called the play, saying the safety would bite if I pump," Smith said. "I didn't see the result, but knew it was six from the reaction of the crowd."
"After only having 2 ½ practices I'm happy with the results," coach Lee Leslie said. "It was what we expected. I felt bad for Cole, he has only had two days of practice, but he has tons of talent."
Omar Bacon finished with 32 yards on eight carries and scored three touchdowns. He added a two-point conversion, giving him 20 points in the game. "It felt good, but I want us to be better," Bacon responded.
Shawn Kojima led the defense with 5.5 tackles and Bart Amundsen had 4.5, including one for loss. Trevor Bell returned and interception 20 yards for a score. As a team the Warriors forced four turnovers on defense, three by interception.
Stan Parrish finished 10-for-21 for 105 yards and one touchdown for the All-Stars.
The Utah Warriors open their regular season on March 13th at home against the Colorado Venom.
