Wambach Named Player of the Week

ATLANTA (Monday, May 6, 2002) - Washington Freedom forward Abby Wambach has been selected as the WUSA's Player of the Week for the week ending May 5, 2002. Wambach scored her first WUSA goal and created the penalty kick that led to the third goal in a 3-0 victory at San Diego on Sunday.

Eight days after scoring her first goal for the U.S. national team, the Rochester, New York native followed up with another strong performance. In the 38th minute, Wambach scored the Freedom's second goal of the evening when Skylar Little centered a pass into the six-yard box that Wambach hammered into the net. In the 71st minute, Wambach was tripped in the penalty box, leading to a penalty kick goal by teammate Monica Gerardo. The 5-foot-10 Wambach took a team-high four shots on the evening.

Wambach has registered a goal or an assist in all three Freedom games she has played in this year. She is currently tied for third in WUSA scoring with one goal and three assists for five points. The University of Florida product's three assists lead all WUSA players.

Wambach, who had 23 points in the voting, outdistanced Philadelphia's Marinette Pichon (20 pts.), Carolina's Tiffany Roberts (15 pts.), San Jose's Pretinha (2 pt.), Carolina's Hege Riise (1 pt.) and Washington's Gerardo (1 pt.). The WUSA's Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
