May 6, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release
NEW YORK - An early goal by Pretinha in the 14th minute snapped a two-game losing streak for San Jose as the CyberRays (2-2-0, 6 pts.) defeated the New York Power (1-3-0, 3 pts.) 1-0 Sunday evening at Mitchel Athletic Complex. Despite controlling the most of the game in the CyberRays third of the field, the Power was unable to overcome the early goal for the team's second straight home loss.
The win was the first for the CyberRays away for Spartan Stadium this season and extended San Jose's undefeated streak to five games (including the playoffs) versus New York.
New York has now lost three straight since defeating the Washington Freedom 4-1 on April 13 at RFK Stadium. The Power is currently the only team to not have a home victory this season (0-2-0).
San Jose goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene (2-2-0, 1.25 GAA) recorded her first shutout of the 2002 season (ninth of her WUSA career), making four saves in the match. Beene has now recorded four clean sheets in all four regular season matches versus New York.
Power reserve goalkeeper Nicole Williams (0-2-0, 1.96 GAA), who recorded three saves, got her first WUSA start due to the red card suspension of Saskia Webber and the recovery of Gao Hong who had offseason wrist surgery.
San Jose got on the board in the 14th minute when Pretinha scored her second goal of the season. Fellow Brazilian Katia was credited with her first assist of the 2002 season on the play after slotting a throughpass behind the New York defense. Pretinha was the first player to get to the ball, beating Williams and giving the CyberRays the early lead.
