The first brutal beat of the AFL season went down between these two teams last week! Welcome to sports gambling, Arena Football bettors. My condolences if you had a ticket on the Soul laying the points against the Valor. A late interception thrown by Philadelphia, and a touchdown with under 30 seconds allowed Washington to backdoor Soul bettors in a high-scoring contest. So what happens this week? Well, I feel safe in saying one thing: The Soul should win this game. They are the better-coached team, and still own the second-best defense in the AFL behind the Empire. The questions is, what will you get out of the offense? Rookie quarterback Greg McGhee looked much better last week against Washington, so I expect even more improvement this week.
Washington's winless season continues to spiral out of control, as the backdoor cover made the contest last week look much more competitive than it really was. The Valor was actually in a 51-33 hole before the Soul started to sleepwalk with a comfortable lead, allowing Washington to put lipstick on a pig of a performance. The Valor is completely unplayable until you see back-to-back weeks of continuity on both sides of the ball. The team has the worst unit defensively, allowing over 50 points per contest, and it has used four quarterbacks in attempting to fill the hole left by Nick Davila's injury.
Yes, laying double digits with a team on its backup quarterback is a terrifying proposition. However, even more troubling is taking points with a team that is in a complete free fall at this late point of the regular season. The Soul is the only way to play this game if you are looking for a side. When it comes to the total, I don't expect Philadelphia to fall asleep at the wheel again should it build a big lead. Look Under 89.5 this week.
