February 9, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
New Orleans VooDoo News Release
New Orleans VooDoo QB Andy Kelly's standout performance in the team's 59-34 victory over the Nashville Kats on Friday was enough to earn him the AFL's Offensive Player of the Week honors for week 2 of the regular season.
Kelly set a career-high in completion percentage (87.9%) as he completed 29-of-33 passes for 277 yards with six touchdown passes against his former team, which he started every game for from 1997-2001.
"I was very happy for Andy to receive this recognition. His performance occurred against a team that he has a prior history with and in an arena in which he has played in a lot of games. For him to have a career night like he did was outstanding. Andy does a great job in running our offense every single week."
Kelly has played an important role in the offensive improvement that the VooDoo have experienced through two games this season as their offensive ranking has risen to second in the AFL. Kelly has completed 62-of-84 passes for 633 yards with 12 touchdown passes and one interception. Kelly is currently second in the AFL in passer rating (125.7), first in passing attempts, completions and passing yards and third in touchdown passes.
One of the Arena Football League's all-time leading passers, Kelly currently holds the AFL career passing records for completions (2925), attempts (4755) and passing yards (32,666) and is second all-time in touchdown passes (633). Kelly has won the award nine times and the VooDoo is the fifth team for which he has received the honor with.
The 2004 Southern Division champion VooDoo return to action this Sunday when they face the defending ArenaBowl Champion San Jose SaberCats in their home opener at the New Orleans Arena. The game will be broadcast live on NBC at 2 p.m. and can also be heard on WWL 870 AM.
