QMJHL Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League

Voltigeurs run away with opening night win

September 10, 2009 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release

DRUMMONDVILLE, Thursday, September 10, 2009 - The Drummondville Voltigeurs kicked off the 2009-10 season in style as three members of last year's President Cup-winning squad, including head coach Guy Boucher, who was hired by the Hamilton Bulldogs during the offseason, as well as all-star forwards Yannick Riendeau and Dany Massé, who recently signed pro contracts with Boston and Montreal respectively, were on hand to witness the raising of the Voltigeurs' championship banner to the rafters of the Marcel-Dionne Centre in front of almost 3,000 fans in attendance.

The festivities remained rampant throughout the game as the Volts easily handled the Val-d'Or Foreurs in a 8-1 win.

Captain Marc-Olivier Vachon got the crowd going early by beating Val-d'Or Foreurs' backstop Sean Coulton with a wrist-shot at 7:31. The Foreurs tied it up at one as Olivier Archambault, the first overall pick in the 2009 QMJHL Entry Draft, got his major junior hockey career started on the right foot by scoring his first goal at 13:55. But the tie was short-lived. Ondrej Palat made it 2-1 with a few minutes left in the first period by burying a gorgeous cross-ice pass from Vachon.

Palat doubled Drummondville's early in the second frame with his second goal of the game. Just a few minutes later, Sean Couturier scored a remarkable goal, pushing the puck between Colton's pads on a backhander shot with one knee on the ice to make it 4-1.

Andrew Randazzo (2), Mathieu Milsé and Jonathan Oligny added markers in the third period to complete the scoring.
