Bellingham Slam News Release
VANCOUVER, Wash. - A Kevin Tyner driving lay-in with 2.4 seconds left was the difference as the Vancouver Volcanoes edged the Bellingham Slam, 129-127, in a hotly-contested International Basketball League game at Clark College on Saturday.
The loss spoiled a career night for Paul Hafford, who scored a game-high 40 points thanks to hot outside shooting.
The Slam began the game with one of their hottest starts of the season, posting 24 points in the first six minutes, and led 41-33 at the end of the first quarter. Paul Hafford was unstoppable in the period, shooting 5-of-6 from three-point range and adding a three-point play from the foul line to lead both teams with 18 points.
The second quarter saw the Volcanoes mount a substantial comeback, using a 15-4 run to take their first lead of the game at 59-56 with 4:07 left in the first half. The Slam were able to regroup and held a 64-62 halftime advantage.
Vancouver was the better of the two teams in the third quarter, outscoring the Slam 33-29 to lead 95-93.
Both teams played a back-and-fourth fourth quarter, with Bellingham going up by eight, at 112-104, with 7:53 left before Vancouver rallied to take a six-point lead, at 125-119, with under three minutes to play. The Slam chipped away at the Volcanoes' lead, eventually tying the game with ten seconds left at 127-127 on a lay-in from Ike Ohanson. After Tyner's go-ahead shot, the Slam had a chance to win at the buzzer, but a tough shot from the corner by Hafford didn't go.
Hafford's 40-point night was complemented by 25 points from Jacob Stevenson and 21 from Ike Ohanson.
Porter Troupe led seven Vancouver players in double figures with 24 points.
The game was the third straight contest at Clark College between the two teams that was decided at either the buzzer or with under three seconds left.
The Slam stay on the road and will now face the Tacoma Tide on Thursday. A 7 p.m. tip-off is set for Curtis High School in University Place.
