LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. - Rehabbing Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ryan Vogelsong pitched seven-strong innings on Wednesday night, but a pair of solo home runs clinched a 2-1 victory for the Gwinnett Braves over the Indianapolis Indians.
Vogelsong (0-1) worked seven innings and allowed just four hits. However, two of them left the park and he received the loss. It was the longest outing for Vogelsong since May 15, 2015, when he was a member of the San Francisco Giants. He did not issue a free pass and retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced.
Aaron Blair (4-3) fanned nine batters over six innings and earned the win for the Braves (48-56).
The Tribe (53-52) struck first with a run in the top of the first. With Danny Ortiz standing at third base, Josh Bell singled up the middle to give Indianapolis a 1-0 advantage.
It was a former Tribe outfielder who evened the game for the Braves in the bottom of the third inning. Mel Rojas Jr. extended his hitting streak to six games with a solo homer to right-center field off of Vogelsong.
Rio Ruiz put Gwinnett in front with a home run to right field in the bottom of the fourth. Like the third inning blast, it came with one out in the inning.
Indianapolis attempted to mount a rally in the ninth inning, and had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position when the game ended.
The Tribe will try and avoid the sweep on Thursday night; first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. The team returns to Victory Field on Friday for a weekend series against the Norfolk Tides.
