Tennessee Valley Raptors News Release

Huntsville, AL - The Tennessee Valley Vipers have been assigned 2002 member, Wes Stephens, along with former Tennessee and J.O. Johnson lineman, Ed Butler.

"Wes and Ed are both guys that give us experience up front, both are young and look like they have a bright future ahead of them," Vipers head coach, Kevin Guy, said. "Wes knows how to keep his motor running. He should be one of our leaders on defense, if I can keep him focused and his mind off the girls. Ed comes from a very good program at Tennessee. He is a well-rounded athlete and has played on the defensive line and at tight end. He is a local guy from Johnson High School and should fit into our organization very well."

Stephens played in nine games for the Vipers last season and recorded 7.0 tackles, 3.5 tackles-for-loss for seven yards, 4.0 sacks for nine yards and one forced fumble. He finished third on the team in sacks despite playing only nine games. He was a four-year letterman at MTSU from 1998-2001, where he recorded 75 tackles, 49 solo, seven sacks for 43 yards and 16 tackles-for-loss for 80 yards.

Butler played in three games for the Roanoke Steam last season and recorded 4.5 tackles and two quarterback hits. He played at Tennessee from 1998-2001 after redshirting the 1997 season. He played defensive end in 1998, defensive tackles in 1999, tight end in 2000 and defensive tackle in 2001. He recorded six career tackles and also saw extensive action on all special teams. He was a member of Tennessee's National Championship team in 1998. He prepped at J.O. Johnson High School where he was named to the Huntsville Times Elite 11 and was an All-Metro and All-City selection.
