Tennessee Valley Raptors News Release

HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Tennessee Valley Vipers have lost quarterback Wes Counts for the remainder of the season with a broken leg. The injury occurred on the Vipers first possession of the game Saturday night against Roanoke.

Dr. Troy Layton of SportsMed performed successful surgery to repair the break and Counts was released from Huntsville Hospital on Monday.

Counts had completed 152-259 passes for 1,793 yards and 30 touchdowns on the season. He had a 100.75 rating and was coming off one of his best games of the season at Quad City, where he completed 17-26 passes for 187 yards and a career-high seven touchdown passes.

Tracy Kendall replaced Counts and rallied the Vipers to a 39-35 win.

VIPERS PICK UP ARENA QUARTERBACK

HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Tennessee Valley Vipers have picked up former Augusta Stallions quarterback, Jermaine Alfred, to replace the injured Wes Counts on the roster.

Alfred completed 284-496 passes for 3,446 yards and 68 touchdowns with Augusta last season. He signed with the Orlando Predators after the season and served as the backup for Jay Gruden for the first half of the season. He was released last week.

"We had the opportunity to bring in a veteran quarterback that put up some good numbers in this league last season," Viper head coach, Kevin Guy, said. "He has played at a higher level with Orlando. He should be a good fit for us."

The Vipers also added another former Predator. Chris Jackson played in seven games with Orlando in 2001 and recorded 14.0 tackles and two pass break ups. He finished his college career at Central Missouri State in 1997 where he rushed for 118 yards on 22 carries, caught four passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns and recorded 38 tackles, two interceptions and three pass break ups on defense. He also played one season at Valdosta State and two years at Blinn Junior College.

"Chris brings us experience in the secondary," Guy said. "He has also played at a higher level with Orlando and should give us speed on offense and defense. He is probable the fastest guy on our team."

The Vipers host the Quad City Steamwheelers Saturday night at 7:30.
