The Tennessee Valley Vipers became only the second team in AF2 history to start a season a perfect 9-0 with a 66-31 win over the Wichita Stealth (6-4) in front of 4,805 fans at the Von Braun Center Saturday night.
The Vipers were the first team to score when Matt Sauk completed a 43-yard pass to Michael James. The Stealth answered with a 30-yard field goal by Jason Corse, which was the only points put on the board by Wichita in the first quarter. The Vipers added another touchdown with a 34-yard pass from Sauk to Jerrian James. The second quarter began with a seven play drive by Wichita which resulted in an 11 yard touchdown pass from Anthony Buich to Golden Goodwin. Tennessee Valley responded with Mark Lewis' longest field goal this season, a 45 yard field goal. Each team added another touchdown before ending the half with a score of Tennessee Valley 24 and Wichita 17.
The Vipers opened the second half with back to back touchdowns. One was the result of Sauk's 29 yard pass to Calvin Hall. The other touchdown was scored by Kenny Bailey, who ran 33 yards after intercepting Anthony Buich's pass at the Tennessee Valley 17-yard line. Although Witchita added two more touchdowns, the Vipers owned the remainder of the football game. The Vipers never trailed in the game, and put it out of reach by scoring four times in the fourth quarter on three Matt Sauk touchdown passes and a fumble recovery by Ron Wilson for a touchdown.
Matt Sauk finished the game 12-18 for 247 yards and six touchdowns. Jerrian James caught four passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns and Michael James caught three passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Kenny Bailey lead the Vipers defensively with 12.0 tackles, one interception, and three pass break-ups. Wes Stephens, David Sucura, and Chris Bell all recorded sacks.
The Vipers with host the Columbus Wardogs next Saturday at 7:30.
