
Veteran outfielder Sauls retires

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The player that sent the Rockford RiverHawks to the 2007 playoffs won't be back for another postseason run.
The team announced today that veteran outfielder Matt Sauls has retired. Sauls hit a walkoff single in the final game of last season, Sept. 2 against Kalamazoo, to beat the Kings, 2-1. With the win, the RiverHawks edged the Kings for the final Frontier League playoff spot.
Sauls reached the playoffs in each of his three professional seasons. He hit .318, ninth in the league, with seven home runs and 44 RBI last season. Sauls broke or matched a career high in all three Triple Crown categories.
The former Florida State Seminole .289 with 15 home runs and 82 RBI in his career.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 16th season this summer.
