New Orleans VooDoo News Release
NEW ORLEANS (June 29, 2012) - Veteran, AF2 record holder, and philanthropist, these are just a couple words to describe New Orleans VooDoo jack linebacker Alvin Ray Jackson.
Jackson explains that now being a veteran of the VooDoo helps him be a leader to those guys that haven't played AFL ball before, which allows him to help them on their positioning, understanding, and overall play the game.
Over the past year, Jackson believes he has improved a lot from last season, "slowing down my game and not moving toward the ball too fast has really allowed me to make things happen for the team," Jackson said.
Currently Jackson is one of the leading VooDoo defensemen with 50.5 total tackles, 41 solo tackles, and he's leading the team with 12 interceptions. His 12 interceptions tie him for most in the AFL with Philadelphia Soul's Ken Richardson.
Jackson holds the AF2 record for the most interceptions in a game with 5 interceptions, and recorded an AFL best of 3 in a game at Utah to help lead the VooDoo to their first win of 2012.
After talking with Jackson about becoming the leader of the league interceptions he said, "my personal goal is to lead the AFL in interceptions, which I plan on doing."
Entering tonight's game, Jackson has recorded at least one interception in his last four games, which have helped guide the VooDoo to wins in three of the four contests. He also has had an interception in six of his last seven games.
"It's exciting for us, this is more of an offensive game and as a defensive player you usually aren't supposed to make these plays, but it's really rewarding," Jackson said about playing arena football.
Jackson has not only been recognized for his on field talents but his off-field philanthropic work, which he visits children at New Orleans Children's Hospital with other players on his team - he was named National Guard Community MVP for his philanthropic efforts.
"I'm the oldest of 8 kids, so I love kids they hold a special place in my heart and I always want to be there for them," Jackson said about his philanthropic work.
The VooDoo (7-7) welcomes the Jacksonville Sharks (7-7) to The Graveyard on Saturday night with the winner sitting alone atop the South Division. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Those interested in buying tickets can call 504-875-3900 or visit www.aflvoodoo.com for more information.
