CAMDEN, N.J. - Former Riversharks right-handed pitcher Jon Velasquez has signed a minor league contract with the Minnesota Twins and received an invitation to Spring Training, the Riversharks announced today. This will be Velasquez's second stint in a Major League system and his first since 2010. He was previously a prospect in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.
Velasquez is coming off a season in Camden that saw him post a 1.95 ERA in 73.2 IP. He struck out 82 batters, the highest total among Atlantic League relievers, while walking 26. In a set-up role, Velasquez posted career numbers in K/9 and K/BB with 10 and 3.15 respectively. His season garnered the 28-year-old a Second-Team Atlantic League All-Star nod.
"Jon did a great job pitching for us last season and it's good to see that it was noticed by MLB," said Riversharks President and General Manager Adam Lorber. "Ultimately the Atlantic League is all about creating success stories like Jon's and we wish him the best of luck in Minnesota."
Prior to signing with the Twins, Velasquez was playing for Cangrejeros de Santurce in Puerto Rico. The Bronx native was originally signed by the Phillies in 2009 and came to Camden in a trade with the Rockland Boulders of the Can-Am League.
