Van Tighem Passes the 'C' to Peet
November 7, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
ALBUQUERQUE - After the New Mexico Scorpions had the same captain for the past three years; an opening arose when Travis Van Tighem retired in the offseason to become the Scorpions' Assistant Coach/Director of Community Relations. Head Coach/Vice President of Hockey Operations Pat Dunn left the decision to Van Tighem, and he has named defenseman Shaun Peet as the team's new captain. It was a decision that Dunn felt more than comfortable leaving to Van Tighem.
"Travis wore the "C" proudly during his three years as the Scorpions captain," stated Dunn, "and he knows what it takes to be a successful captain. He was a tremendous leader in his three years here, and I have a great amount of respect for him as a player and a person. Shaun Peet has the same traits that Travis did when he played for the Scorpions."
"I'm grateful that Pat allowed me to select the Scorpions' new captain," said Van Tighem. "Shaun Peet will make a great captain for the team. He plays hard every shift, he makes sacrifices for the team and he's a great person. He has everything you look for in a captain."
"It's a huge honor for me," said Peet, "perhaps even the highest honor for a hockey player. I was humbled by it initially, because there are so many guys on this team that could be the captain. Obviously, Travis leaves some huge shoes to fill. It's not something to take lightly, but I'm definitely excited about the challenge."
