Valkyries Sign Outside Hitter Courtney Schwan

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orlando Valkyries have signed 6-foot-1 outside hitter Courtney Schwan to the active roster as they make their run for the final playoff spot in the Pro Volleyball Federation chase for a championship.

Schwan, formally of the University of Washington Huskies, just finished her sixth season overseas with Aeroitalia Smi Roma Volley in Italy. She previously played in the top leagues in France and Greece as well.

"I'm just excited to be here, I'll help this team in any way I'm called upon to do so," Schwan said. "It has been a super fast integration period, but the girls have been fun and the Orlando organization has been tremendous. I have a great deal of gratitude having this opportunity to play in the inaugural season of this league on home turf."

Schwan is from Auburn, Washington. In high school, she was a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Washington and led Bellarmine Preparatory School to consecutive state titles. At the University of Washington, she was the 2016 Pac-12 Player of the Year and was selected to the AVCA All-America First Team.

"We're very excited to bring in Courtney for the remainder of the season," said Valkyries Head Coach Amy Pauly. "We hope that her experience will bolster our roster and make us even more competitive in our upcoming matches."

Schwan, who will wear No. 24 for the Valkyries, replaces Shainah Joseph on the active roster and is eligible to play in tonight's road match against the Vegas Thrill at 10 p.m. at Lee's Family Forum. Joseph was recently called up to the Canadian women's national team.
