UW 3B Taken by D-Backs

June 5, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL) - Yakima Bears News Release

The MLB First-Year Player's Draft continued Tuesday and the Yakima Bears parent club, the Arizona Diamondbacks, selected 14 players in addition to first-round catcher Stryker Trahan who was taken on the opening day of the draft.

In the sixth round Arizona took Seattle native and University of Washington everyday third baseman Jacob Lamb. Lamb was the top prospect in the state of Washington according to Baseball America coming out of Bishop Blanchet High School and was drafted by the Pirates in the 38th round in 2009. The six-foot-three lefty hitter passed on the Pirates and has started 54 games each of the last three seasons for the Huskies with extreme consistency. Over his three-year career, Lamb hit .326 with 52 extra-base hits and 88 RBIs.

Lamb wasn't the only Pac-12 player selected by Arizona on the draft's second day. Fellow Pac-12 All-Conference honorable mention honoree Jake Barrett from Arizona State is a right-handed pitcher who was picked by the D-backs in the third round.

Through 15 rounds the Diamondbacks have favored position players, with only five pitchers selected.

Many of the players drafted will be reporting to Yakima June 13 for a summer with the Bears. The club looks to have its roster set by June 14.

A list of the Diamondbacks players drafted so far can be found on the next page.

The draft will conclude with rounds 16 through 40 Wednesday starting at 12:00 EST.

The Yakima Bears begin the season June 15 in Eugene and will play at home for the first time on June 20. Season tickets and mini plans are on sale now at the downtown Bears office at 17 N. 3rd Street, Suite 101 and online at yakimabears.com.
