On Thursday the midfield duo of Diana Matheson and Desiree Scott were called to the Canadian Women's National Team for Canada's official sendoff match against Mexico on May 18. Canada's final World Cup roster is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Last week four Utah Royals FC players were named to their respective national teams to participate in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup as DFs Katie Bowen (New Zealand), Becky Sauerbrunn (USA) and Kelley O'Hara (USA) along with FW Christen Press (USA) all being summoned. Bowen is one of just six players who have played every minute of the team's 2019 NWSL season thus far.
The NWSL will witness a World Cup year in 2019, with URFC expecting seven players - including Bowen - to make appearances with their respective international teams for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup held in France. The World Cup dates are set for June 7 to July 7 with international team members scheduled to return prior to the end of the NWSL regular season.
Last Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium, Utah Royals FC topped the Chicago Red Stars 1-0 courtesy of an 84th minute goal from FW Amy Rodriguez and another strong performance from GK Nicole Barnhart and the URFC back line. The win marked the third consecutive victory and shutout for the Utah side to open 2019 and helped usher Utah to the top spot in the NWSL standings.
URFC holds a 2-0-1 (7 points) all-time record against Saturday's visitors and welcomes Houston back to Rio Tinto Stadium where it topped the Dash 1-0 on May 19, 2018 courtesy of a FW Erika Tymrak strike. Utah Royals FC last faced the Dash on August 5, 2018, walking away from Houston 2-1 victors with FWs Christen Pressand Katie Stengel both notched goals.
