Utah Eagles News Release

The Utah Eagles shook off early game jitters, a 19 point deficit, and a talented Minot team to win its home opener, 134-120 Friday in Salt Lake City. The Eagles fell behind early and seemed well on their way to a blow out loss, before spreading its wings and high flying to the going away win over the Skyrockets.

The Eagles fell behind by 15 at the half behind the hot shooting Desmond Ferguson of Minot. Ferguson lit up the nervous Eagles for 15 first quarter points, while Jitim Young added 8 points. Rob Griffin kept the Eagles alive with 9 points.

The second quarter featured the Minot full court press, which led to easy baskets by Ferguson, Young and Steve Castleberry. Josh Nigut and Paul Pardue came off the bench to give a spark for Utah adding 7 and 5 points respectively, but the Skyrockets led 67-52 at halftime.

The third quarter started out as the Mike Hall and Ferguson show, with both players scoring 8 early points in the first 3 minutes of the quarter. But it was Bryant Markson and John Millsap that had the final say in the quarter, as they added 13 and 11 points in the quarter to help tie the game at 97.

The final period was about the balance and versatility of the Eagles, with Griffin, Markson, Millsap and Hall all adding highlight reel finishes in transition as the Eagles used dunks and open jumpers to gain the lead and hold it down the stretch.

Millsap led the Eagles balanced attack with 28 points and 13 rebounds, while Markson came off the bench to add 27 points and 10 rebounds himself. Griffin chipped in 26 points while Hall finished with 25 points in his CBA debut. Ferguson led all scorers with 43 points, while Young scored 20. Dale Miller added 18 while Ray Cunningham kicked in 16 points for Minot.
