LAST SEASON:

BLAZE SEASON ENDS IN RECORD-BREAKING FASHION
Utah Sets Numerous AFL Expansion Records

SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Blaze (7-9) finished their inaugural regular season by establishing several team and individual expansion records. Utah's offense, guided by AFL Hall of Fame head coach DANNY WHITE, set six expansion records and are now set to travel to U.S. Airways Arena to play the No. 3-seed Arizona Rattlers (8-8) on Saturday, May 20 at 3 p.m. (MT) in the Wild Card Round.

This season also brought new individual expansion records for SIAHA BURLEY (5-10, 185, Central Florida) and STEVE VIDETICH (6-2, 200, N.C. State).

Burley, who is an Offensive Player of the Year and All-Arena candidate, finished the season by setting new expansion marks in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns, while earning top honors in the AFL with most yards gained this season at 1,934, the second highest (Arizona's CALVIN SCHEXNAYDER, 1,982 in 1998) in AFL history. Burley finished ahead of Colorado's DAMIAN HARRELL, who finished with 1,920.

The career record book also took a hit when Videtich became the all-time leader in kicking points with 1,381 career points, while setting two new expansion marks for PATs attempted and made.

After joining the team midway through this season, QB ANDY KELLY became the AFL's all-time passing touchdown leader with 768, passing New York's AARON GARCIA with 757.

THE IFS...:
If the Blaze defeat New Orleans it would...
*Give Utah a 1-0 record all-time versus the VooDoo.
*Give Utah a 1-0 record at home to open the 2007 season.
*Give Utah a 8-9 all-time regular-season record.
*Give Utah a 4-5 all-time regular-season home record.

THE COACHES:
Utah - Danny White, 15th season
128-64 (.667) reg. season; 148-75 (.664) overall
0-0 career vs. New Orleans
Entering his 15th season as an AFL head coach and second with the Blaze, White has compiled a record of 141-65 and advanced to the AFL Playoffs in 12 of the previous 13 years (hasn't missed the postseason since 1992). Prior to joining the Blaze, White was the head coach of the Arizona Rattlers for 13 seasons (1992-2004). The AFL Hall of Fame coach has two titles (1994 and 1997) to his credit and has made five ArenaBowl appearances (1994, 97, 2002-04). During his last season in Arizona in 2004, White compiled a 13-6 record and made his third straight ArenaBowl appearance. White won AFL "Coach of the Year" award in 1993 and officially became the head coach of the Blaze on April 21, 2005. White guided the Blaze to a 7-9 regular season record during the Blaze's inaugural season. The Blaze also made the postseason before falling to the rival Arizona Rattlers in 2006.

New Orleans - Mike Neu, 5th season
26-20 (.565) reg. season; 27-22 (.551) overall
0-0 career vs. Utah
The first coach of the VooDoo, Mike Neu returns to the sidelines in 2007 for his third season in New Orleans after the team was forced to suspend operations for the 2006 season due to Hurricane Katrina. Although his team did not play in 2006, Neu spent the year assisting the New Orleans Saints scouting staff, while mapping out the VooDoo's return to play at the same time. During the 2006 campaign, Neu and his staff attended numerous AFL contests, keeping abreast of other teams and players throughout the league. Neu has compiled a 20-12 regular season record as head coach of the VooDoo, leading his team to back-to-back winning campaigns. Overall in his career, Neu has posted a 26-20 regular season record as an Arena Football League head coach with two teams and a 27-22 overall mark including the playoffs.

ROSTER MOVES - The Blaze reached their season opening roster by waiving eight players, placing one player on the other league exempt list and re-signing 13 players. The team will begin the 2007 season with 22 players on their active roster. Each team can have up to 24 players on their rosters, but must designate only 20 as being active on game nights.

NOTES:

OPENING LOSS EQUALS ARENABOWL? - Usually you would hope to open the season with a victory to get the ball rolling in the right direction, but if you are superstitious you might reconsider. During Coach White's previous 14 seasons in the AFL, his teams made it to the ArenaBowl five times. In each of those ArenaBowl seasons, his team started the season with a loss, going 0-5 in season openers.

REUNITED IN COMPETITION - Coach RON JAMES enters his first season with the Blaze after coaching with the Las Vegas Gladiators for five seasons. Coach James will be reunited with his former coaching collegue, GARY GUSSMAN. Coach Gussman currently serves as the Special Teams Coach for the VooDoo.

COLLEGE COMPETITION - 1998, BYU football took on New Orleans based school, Tulane, in the Liberty Bowl. Tulane won the game 41-27.

NBA BRINGS TWO CITIES TOGETHER...TWICE - The Utah Jazz started in New Orleans in the 1974-75 season. The New Orleans Jazz played five seasons in New Orleans with a record of 161-249. In the summer of 2005 the New Orleans Hornets and Utah Jazz were involved in the biggest trade in NBA history which saw the Jazz obtain the rights to Greg Ostertag.

PLAYER TIES

A FAMILIAR FACE - The Blaze acquired current New Orleans QB ANDY KELLY during the middle of last season. After joining the Blaze, Kelly led the Blaze to a 4-1 record and was critical in the push to the playoffs. In his five games with the Blaze, Kelly threw 27 touchdown passes while being picked only 4 times. Kelly is the all-time leader in AFL history with 39,948 passing yards (THAT'S 22.7 miles!!) and professional football 776 touchdowns (NFL Hall of Famer DAN MARINO has 420).

BLAST FROM THE PAST - When HAN OLSEN takes the field against New Orleans, it will be the first time facing his former team. Hans played for the VooDoo in 2005 where he totaled 11.0 tackles and one assisted sack.

BLAZIN' BURLEY - Out of the eight Blaze players who have played against New Orleans in their career, the most successful was SIAHA BURLEY who finished with five touchdowns, four of which were receiving touchdowns, and 82 receiving yards. He also added 53 kick return yards and two rushing yards.

TOM PACE and ORSHAWANTE BRYANT have also posted numbers against the VooDoo. Pace contributed four receptions for 34 yards and added an unassisted tackle. Bryant caught four passes for 30 yards and one touchdown. He also contributed one unassisted tackle on defense.

WILL HINES BRING IT AGAIN? VooDoo WR ANTHONY HINES played against the Blaze as a member of the Grand Rapids Rampage. In his only game against the Blaze, Hines was responsible for two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving. Overall, he finished with 65 receiving yards.

STORYLINES & FUN FACTS:

HEY COACH! Blaze head coach DANNY WHITE is currently in four Halls of Fame (Arizona Sports, Arizona State University, College Football and Arena Football). He has 13 years of experience in the AFL and owns two ArenaBowl titles (1994 and 1997). But, did you know that the assistant coaching staff has a combined total of 26 years of Arena Football experience?

Assistant Coach, RON JAMES enters his first season with the Blaze and brings nine years of AFL experience. James has coached with the Albany Firebirds, the Houston ThunderBears, and most recently, the Las Vegas Gladiators (two seasons as head coach, three seasons as assistant coach). Offensive coordinator and future AFL Hall of Famer, HUNKIE COOPER, is the AFL's all-time all-purpose yards leader (20,587), two-time Ironman of the Year (1999-2000) and AFL MVP (1993) during his 13 years in the AFL. Assistant Offensive/Defensive Line coach, LINDSAY HASSELL, played four years with the Oklahoma Wranglers (2000-01) and Arizona Rattlers (2002-03).

THE 'O' SHOW: WR/DB ORSHAWANTE BRYANT finished second on the Blaze with 90 receptions for 1,039 yards and 58.0 tackles. Bryant reached 50 career touchdowns and was named Ironman of the Game for the Blaze twice last season.

TWO BURLEYS EQUALS ONE SMITH... ALMOST - Rookie OL MYNIYA SMITH (6-6, 364, Southern) was one of the last cuts by the New York Giants this past season. Smith, who is nicknamed "The Wall," had some issues with his physical. The Blaze doctors didn't have a scale large enough to weigh Smith, so with some encouragement from his teammates, he climbed on the "luggage weigher" at the airport during the Blaze's return trip from preseason scrimmage with the Kansas City Brigade. Teammate SIAHA BURLEY weighs 176 pounds, while Smith is more than twice his weigh.

ARENABOWL XXI - New Orleans, a city renowned for sports championships, will host its first team championship since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina when ArenaBowl XXI is played at New Orleans Arena on Sunday, July 29, 2007 at 2 p.m. CT on ABC.

A LEG UP ON THE COMPETITION: Blaze K STEVE VIDETICH is the AFL's all time leading scorer and looks to move up on another milestone in his career in field goals made. He is only eight field goals away from breaking Mike Black's all-time record.

SACK MASTER - Newly-acquired FB/LB FRANK CARTER had FOUR sacks in one game last season (against the New York Dragons, while he was a member of the Nashville Kats.) The Blaze had a total of EIGHT sacks as a team in 2006.

ARENA QB RATING: The debate has gone on for years in the AFL... Does the outdoor QB Rating really translate to the indoor game? In a game where possessions and completion percentage dictates whether you win or lose, we decided to come up with a different formula that puts more weight on "TD-INT ratio" and completion percentage and no emphasis on yardage. Here's how it works:

TD% = TDs divided by TDs + INT

ARENA QB FORMULA: Multiply the TD% by 2 and add the completion % and divide it all by 3. Since the AFL is a different game, below is the current ranking of the top 10 QBs based on the rating system for AFL QBs:

QUARTERBACK COM% TDs INT TD % ARENA RATING*

VOODOO PLAYERS TO WATCH:

QB ANDY KELLY - Entering his 14th Arena Football League season, Kelly has made a name for himself as one of the League's premier quarterbacks. Kelly returns to New Orleans after spending the past season with the Kansas City Brigade and Utah Blaze, where he will be reunited with his former teammate and coach, MIKE NEU. In his 13 seasons, Kelly continues to be one of the AFL's All-time passing leaders. He currently holds the AFL career passing records for completions (3,621), attempts (5,827), passing yards (39,948) and touchdown passes (768). Kelly also holds the record for most touchdowns ever by any professional quarterback in any league. With another 2,000-plus passing yard season in 2006, Kelly further surpassed the league record for career 2,000-yard passing seasons with 11.

FB DAN CURRAN - Curran came to New Orleans and had an immediate impact, as the top rushing threat in the Arena Football League. Curran led the league in rushing and was named to the League's All-Ironman Team. After going to training camp with the New Orleans Saints to compete for a roster spot in 2004, Curran returns to the VooDoo in 2007. His presence is expected to spur the VooDoo rushing offense to new heights. In 2004, Curran appeared in all 16 regular season games and one playoff contest for New Orleans, leading the Arena Football League in rushing, carrying 85 times for 336 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also caught five passes for 61 yards. In addition to leading the league in rushing, Curran set career-highs in all major offensive rushing categories and became only the fourth player in league history to record over 20 rushing touchdowns in a season.
