The OSC Interview: Philadelphia Soul offensive coordinator Connell Maynor

Philadelphia Soul

OurSports Central contributor Fran Stuchbury recently interviewed Philadelphia Soul offensive coordinator Connell Maynor at Soul media day. Maynor spent time with six different teams, including two stints with the Orlando Predators, and won four ArenaBowl titles during his playing career.

Fran Stuchbury: What interested you in taking the offensive coordinator job with the Philadelphia Soul?

Connell Maynor: It's just my passion, I played the game 13 years. I coached college football also. I always wanted to coach in the AFL and the opportunity to be offensive coordinator was here so I jumped on it. Hopefully in the future I can be a head coach in the AFL.

FS: How is your relationship with Philadelphia Soul head coach Brett Munsey?

CM: My relationship with Munsey is great. We were together with the Orlando Predators so I have known him for a long time. We're like brothers on and off the field. He's got defense and the overall scope of everything, and I got offense.

FS: How has the team progressed in training camp so far?

CM: I think we are coming along pretty good. We have a lot of new faces, but I think they are catching on to the game pretty good.

FS: You played with the New York CityHawks who played their games at Madison Square Garden. How was that experience?

CM: It was great. We didn't sell it out a lot. New York is so big, and the CityHawks were a new team in the AFL. We got some decent crowds there, and it was great to play in Madison Square Garden.

FS: Was the highlight of your playing career leading the Orlando Predators to the ArenaBowl XIV championship over the Nashville Kats?

CM: Of course, I got four championship rings, one when I was a starter. I was the MVP of ArenaBowl XIV. I have to say that is the highlight of my career, leading that team and winning that ArenaBowl.

FS: Does free substitution take away most of the versatility, with fewer players playing both offense and defense?

CM: You still have great athletes. They won't be able to show it as much as we did in the past. We will still have a couple of guys who will play both ways in injury situations but for the most part, it will be like the big game in the NFL and guys will go one way.

FS: Would you be interesting in going to af2 as a head coach or do you consider that a step down?

CM: I think I got enough experience and know well enough that I don't need to go down to af2 to be a head coach. I think that would be a step down for me and I don't want to go that route.
