OVERVIEW: The Blaze lost their first place position in the Western Division with a short week and a disappointing road loss at Grand Rapids, 59-49, the first-ever Thursday night game in franchise history. Utah threw a franchise-high five interceptions and fell behind 17 points after two quarters, and the Blaze were never able to gain the lead as they lost to a Central Division opponent for the first time. Las Vegas rolls into the Delta Center after losing to DANNY WHITE'S former team, the Arizona Rattlers, 47-33, last week. Las Vegas proves to be a pivotal divisional game for the Blaze, as both teams are tied for second place with a 3-5 record. The Blaze feature the No. 1 rush defense going up against the No. 1 rushing team in the AFL in the Gladiators. Las Vegas is in the midst of playing five of six games at home with Friday's game being their only road game, only 6 hours away from the Thomas & Mack Center.
THE SERIES: This will mark the first meeting between the two teams. Blaze head coach DANNY WHITE is 5-2 against the Gladiators in his head coaching career, including 4-0 at home. This will mark the first meeting against Ron James.
WHAT'S AHEAD: After playing their second straight Friday night game at the Delta Center, the Blaze will play a road game across the country when they take on Tampa Bay on April 1. The Blaze will then face two more divisional opponents at the Delta Center on April 7 against division-leader Arizona and April 15 versus Los Angeles.

NOTABLES: 2005 AFLWA Offensive Player of the Year, OS SIAHA BURLEY, looks to establish some new expansion records in 2006. Burley, who had 117 receptions for 1,542 yards and a league-leading 45 touchdowns in 2005, figures to be a threat to re-write the books... The expansion records Burley will be chasing are held by former Detroit Fury OS ROBERT GORDON who tallied 125 receptions for 1,630 yards and 42 touchdowns in 2001... Burley is currently tied for the league lead with 72 catches, has a league leading 986 yards, and is in second place with 24 touchdowns for 144 points... Burley is currently attempting to break all major AFL single-season receiving records and is on pace for 144 receptions (MARCUS NASH, Las Vegas, 2004 holds the record at 154), 1,972 yards (CALVIN SCHEXNAYDER, Arizona, 1998 holds the AFL record at 1,982 yards) and 48 touchdowns (five players are currently tied with 46)... Burley set the single-game expansion record for receiving yards (259) and tied the single-game touchdown mark (6) in week three at the Delta Center against New York.
LAST WEEK:
GRAND RAPIDS PICKS OFF UTAH, 59-49
Five Interceptions Downfall For Blaze on Road
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Rampage recorded five interceptions and scored 24 unanswered points in the first half as the Utah Blaze lost, 59-49, in front of 4,848 fans at Van Andel Arena on Thursday night.
"We need to do a better job of protecting the football," said Utah head coach/general manager Danny White. "But, this wasn't just one player for us. This loss goes to the entire team. We need to play better, collectively, if we expect to win."
The Rampage were led by Offensive Player of the Game QB Chad Salisbury, who connected on 19-of-30 passes for 231 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. Two-way standout, WR/DB Josh Bush, earned both Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors by collecting three receptions for 36 yards, three touchdowns, while adding 7.5 total tackles and an interception.
The Blaze (3-5) started off the scoring when OL/DL Bryan Henderson hauled in a 10-yard reception from QB Jason Gesser to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Rampage (3-5) answered with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Chad Salisbury to Josh Bush to knot the score at 7-7. A Marvin Taylor interception was followed by a 24-yard field goal by Peter Martinez to give the Rampage a 10-7 lead to end the first quarter.
After an interception by OL/DL Colin Bryant, OS Anthony Hines scored from a yard out to give Grand Rapids a 17-7 lead to start the second quarter.
Gesser threw his third interception of the half when Bush stepped in front of OS Siaha Burley at the goal line to prevent a sure Blaze touchdown. Salisbury then found WR/LB Jerome Riley on the very next play for a 19-yard touchdown to extend the Rampage lead to 24-7.
Gesser found WR/DB Orshawante Bryant on a 21-yard touchdown to narrow the lead to 24-14 in the second quarter.
The Rampage would go on to hold a 38-21 halftime lead after touchdowns by Hines and Timon Marshall.
The Blaze would rebound to outscore the Rampage 28-21 in the second half, but fell to 1-1 against Central Division teams and failed to win back-to-back games for the first time in franchise history.
Gesser finished 24-of-42 passing for 293 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions. Burley finished with seven receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns and 232 all-purpose yards. WR/LB Tom Pace finished with seven receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown.
THE IFS...:
If Utah defeats Las Vegas it would...
*Give Utah two consecutive wins at the Delta Center (2-3)
*Give Utah its first home win against a division opponent (1-1).
*Give Utah a winning record (3-2) against Western Division opponents.
*Give Utah a 4-5 all-time regular-season record.
*Give QB Jason Gesser his first win as the Blaze starting quarterback.
*Maintain or give Utah a tie for second place in the Western Division.
THE COACHES:
Utah - Danny White, 14th season
124-60 (.674) reg. season; 144-70 (.673) overall
5-2 career vs. Las Vegas
White is currently in his 14th season as an AFL head coach and first with the Blaze. White has compiled a record of 142-68 and advanced to the AFL Playoffs in 12 of the previous 13 years (hasn't missed the postseason since 1992). Prior to joining the Blaze, White was the head coach of the Arizona Rattlers for 13 seasons (1992-2004). The AFL Hall of Fame coach has two titles (1994 and 1997) to his credit and has made five ArenaBowl appearances (1994, 97, 2002-04). During his last season in Arizona in 2004, White compiled a 13-6 record and made his third straight ArenaBowl appearance. White, won AFL "Coach of the Year" award in 1993. White officially became the head coach of the Blaze on April 21, 2005. He played quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys (1976-88) and helped lead the Cowboys to the postseason five times and won three NFC East titles during his tenure as starting QB. In his first year as a starter (1980), White set the club single-season record for touchdown passes (28) and then broke the record (29) in 1983. Those records still stand as the top two single-season marks in franchise history. He still owns eight Cowboy records and is the member of FOUR Halls of Fame (Arizona Sports, Arizona State, College Football and Arena Football).
Las Vegas- Ron James, 2nd season
11-13 (.458) reg. season, 11-13 overall (.458)
0-0 career vs. Utah
Ron James is in his second season as head coach of the Las Vegas Gladiators. In his first year as head coach the Gladiators his team ranked first in total offense and first in total defense Arena Football League and finished with an 8-8 record. Prior to becoming the head coach, James served as assistant head coach/line coach and special team's coordinator for the Gladiator organization from 2001-2004. Coach James has nine years of AFL experience having served as the line coach and player personnel director with the Houston ThunderBears from 2000-2001 and as an assistant with the Albany Firebirds in 1990 and 1991. In addition to coaching in the AFL, James has coached a combined total of 14 years on the collegiate level. From 1993 thru 1998 James coached at Kentucky Wesleyan College. While at KWC James served as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 1993. The following season James was promoted the assistant head coach/defensive coordinator and coached the secondary. He remained in that position until 1998.

SIAHA RELIEF: OS SIAHA BURLEY is currently tied for the lead league in receptions (72) and leads the AFL in receiving yards (986) and is in second place in TDs (24) and points (144). Burley is on pace to break several expansion records held by Robert Gordon and could break a couple of AFL records, including yardage and touchdowns.
ARENA QB RATING: The debate has gone on for years in the AFL... Does the outdoor QB Rating really translate to the indoor game? In a game where possessions and completion percentage dictates whether you win or lose, we decided to come up with a different formula that puts more weight on "TD-INT ratio" and completion percentage and no emphasis on yardage. Here's how it works:
TD% = TDs + INT divided by TDs
ARENA QB FORMULA: Multiply the TD% by 2 and add the completion % and divide it all by 3.
Since the AFL is a different game, below is the current ranking of the top 10 QBs based on the rating system for AFL QBs:
PLAYER TEAM COM% TDs INT TD % ARENA RATING
Clint Dolezel DAL 69.2% 56 3 94.9% 86.4%
Matt D'Orazio CHI 68.7% 34 2 94.4% 85.8%
Aaron Garcia NYD 77.1% 32 4 88.9% 84.9%
John Dutton COL 62.6% 56 3 94.9% 84.1%
Joe Germaine UTA 67.7% 37 5 88.1% 81.3%
Matt Nagy GEO 68.0% 42 6 87.5% 81.0%
Shane Stafford TBS 65.0% 44 7 86.3% 79.2%
Mark Grieb SJS 65.2% 41 7 85.4% 78.7%
Sonny Cumbie LAA 60.8% 20 3 87.0% 78.3%
OH MY DARLING âCLEMEN'TIME: RB/LB KEVIN CLEMENS leads the team with six rushing touchdowns, which also ties him for third place in the AFL. Clemens also leads the Blaze with 25 attempts and 43 yards.
HOME HEATS UP: The Utah Blaze currently lead the Arena Football League in average attendance (15,591) and have drawn 62,365 fans in just four games. The Blaze have recorded two sellouts (Dallas on Feb. 4 and San Jose on March 4.)
LUCKY 1,300 - STEVE VIDETICH became the AFL's all-time scoring leader for kickers (surpassing MIKE BLACK's 1,253) this season and currently has 1,316 points. Viditech made all seven of his PAT attempts last week against Grand Rapids.

2. Mike Black 1,253
3. Remy Hamilton, Los Angeles 1,238
4. Clay Rush, Colorado 1,114

THE âO' SHOW: WR/DB ORSHAWANTE BRYANT is second on the team with 45 catches for 560 yards and averages 70 yards per game. Bryant has been named Ironman of the Game for the Blaze twice this season as he also contributes key plays on the defensive side of the football.
SETTING THE PACE: WR/LB TOM PACE currently has 757 all-purpose yards, and those yards derive from a variety of ways. He has 12 rushing yards, 413 receiving yards, 326 kickoff yards, and 6 INT return yards, for an average of 94.6 all-purpose yards per game. Pace has also recorded three forced fumbles and 16 tackles.
BATTLE OF THE TRENCHES: Controlling the line of scrimmage is vital to a teams success and nobody stops the run like the Utah Blaze, who rank first in the AFL allowing only 9.8 rush yards per game. The Gladiators roll into town more than tripling that amount, rushing for a league-high 33.7 yards per contest.

UTAH'S BURLEY EARNS AFL MONTHLY HONORS
Offensive Specialist Takes Offensive Player of the Month
The Arena Football League Office announced Utah Blaze OS SIAHA BURLEY (6-0, 185, Central Florida) as Offensive Player of the Month for February.
Through six games, Burley led the AFL in scoring (126), touchdowns (21), all-purpose yards (1,113), receptions (61) and receiving yards (852). Utah is 3-4 and leads the Western Division.
"This is a tremendous honor," Burley said. "This is an award that wasn't earned alone. My teammates and coaches were all a part of this and hopefully we will continue to play together toward the common goal of winning an ArenaBowl title."
HEY COACH! Blaze head coach DANNY WHITE is currently in four Halls of Fame (Arizona Sports, Arizona State University, College Football and Arena Football). He has 13 years of experience in the AFL and owns two ArenaBowl titles (1994 and 1997), while not having a losing season since 1992. But, did you know that the assistant coaching staff has a combined total of 33 years of Arena Football experience?
Offensive/Defensive Line coach, FLINT FLEMING, played in six ArenaBowls and has three titles (1990, 1992 and 1997) during his 16 years in Arena Football. He was also named to the AFL's 15th Anniversary Team. Offensive coordinator and future AFL Hall of Famer, HUNKIE COOPER, is the AFL's all-time all-purpose yards leader (20,587), two-time Ironman of the Year (1999-2000) and AFL MVP (1993) during his 13 years in the AFL. Assistant Offensive/Defensive Line coach, LINDSAY HASSELL, played four years with the Oklahoma Wranglers (2000-01) and Arizona Rattlers (2002-03).
Despite being in his first season of coaching Arena Football, assistant head coach/defensive coordinator, LEE LESLIE, brings 21 years of coaching experience, including 14 championship titles and a year of coaching in the NIFL (Utah Warriors).
CLIMBING THE CHARTS - Head coach DANNY WHITE picks up where he left off after a year absence from the AFL coaching ranks. The AFL Hall of Fame coach is currently No. 2 on the league's all-time coaches win list. Below is a list of the all-time winningest coaches:
