SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Blaze have reached agreements with rookie QB Nick Stephens and WR Chase Deadder, the team announced today. Stephens and Deadder both played for the Tennessee Titans during the 2012 NFL preseason.
Stephens (6-3, 235, Tarleton State) played in two preseason contests for the Titans and completed 80 percent of his attempts for 24 yards. He threw for 4,524 yards and 27 touchdowns during his final two seasons at Tarleton State.
Prior to transferring to Tarleton State, Stephens played three seasons at the University of Tennessee. He began his career by setting a Vols record, as he tossed 106 consecutive passes without an interception. In total, Stephens threw for 982 yards and five touchdowns during his Tennessee career.
"Nick has all the tools you look for in a top-tier quarterback," said Head Coach Ron James. "He's a smart player with a rare combination of arm strength and accuracy. I'm excited to see how he acclimates to our offense as he continues to gain experience."
Deadder (6-5, 225, Sacramento State) started 19 games during his college career at Sacramento State. He hauled in 73 passes for 1,298 yards and 11 touchdowns. Deadder's most successful season came in 2010, when he earned second-team All-Big Sky Conference honors and was voted his team's most valuable player after posting 37 receptions for 788 yards and six scores.
"Chase is as physical as they come," James continued. "He's a big, strong wide receiver with the ability to use his body to shield defenders from the football. We're thrilled to add this young, talented player to our offense."
