Real Monarchs News Release
Sandy, Utah (Fri., March 20, 2015) - Real Monarchs SLC Head Coach Freddy Juarez today unveiled his inaugural 2015 USL roster (http://realmonarchs.com/player-bios/), 48 hours prior to the expansion club's first-ever match this Sunday, March 22, at 6:00 p.m. MT against LA Galaxy II. Utah soccer fans and people worldwide can view the historic stream via www.RealMonarchs.com.
The inaugural Monarchs team features two University of New Mexico products, DF Riley McGovern and GK Victor Rodriguez; two of RSL's 2015 MLS SuperDraft picks, MF Lucas Baldin (South Florida) and DF Jordan Murrell (Syracuse - awaiting work visa); two players with previous MLS experience, FW Emery Welshman (Toronto) and MF Alec Sundly (New England); a pair of international players, DF Marvin Baumgartner (Switzerland/El Salvador) and DF Lennon Celestino (Brazil); a trio of former college standouts, FW Leon Brown (Notre Dame), DF Darion Copeland (Alabama-Birmingham) and GK Eric Osswald (Xavier); and local product MF Garrett Losee, the former BYU/Cal-State Fullerton man who beat out 300+ Utahns to earn a contract.
The 15-man Monarchs roster features eight first-year professional players and a trio of RSL-AZ Academy standouts - MF Ricardo Velazco, MF Coco Navarro & FW Eti Tavares - each of whom progressed under Juarez' tutelage in Casa Grande. One current academy player - MF Jose Hernandez - will be called in for Sunday's first-ever match, while seven Real Salt Lake players - including former academy products Eduardo "Lalo" Fernandez and Utah natives Sebastian "Bofo" Saucedo and Adolfo "Fito" Ovalle - will also be loaned to the Monarchs. Other RSL men potentially getting game action Sunday include DF Aaron Maund, rookie defenders Boyd Okwuonu and Phanuel Kavita, and MF John Stertzer.
Juarez - a native of Las Cruces, New Mexico who has several years of experience at the RSL-AZ Academy and recently participated in a two-year Major League Soccer program with the French Football Federation - leads the Monarchs into its inaugural season with kickoff this Sunday at 6:00 p.m. MT. against LA Galaxy II, the first of two road games prior to the club's first-ever home match on Wed., April 8, at 7:00 p.m. MT at Rio Tinto Stadium. Juarez and assistants David "Bingy" Lara and Jeff Ginn take the club to Portland to face Timbers 2 next weekend, prior to the post-Easter home opener for the Monarchs.
Sunday's game will be played in Carson, Calif., on the campus of Cal State-Dominguez Hills against "#LosDos," the lone previous MLS-operated organization to call USL home in 2014. Welshman will miss Sunday's match due to his international call-up to the Guyanese National Team, the young Canadian's second such tour of international duty in recent months. Welshman is expected to return for the Monarchs' 2015 home opener on Wed., April 8 against Portland.

ABOUT THE MONARCHS Real Salt Lake Owner Dell Loy Hansen has formed the Monarchs as an elite lower-division professional squad which bridges the gap between Real Salt Lake and the club's highly-lauded academy at the Grande Sports complex in Arizona, which has produced a perennial pipeline of NCAA Division I players, young professionals and has consistently competed for numerous national championships at the U-18 and U-16 levels in recent years.
The club has ambitiously announced plans to break ground later this year on an 8,000-seat stadium in West Valley City, near the Maverik Center, on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley. The future home of the Monarchs, an NWSL club, and other ancillary professional and community events could open in 2017.
