USL Fox Sports World Game of the Week

August 18, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1) News Release

Battery @ Mariners

This Friday's live USL on Fox Sports World A-League match takes place at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in Virginia Beach, Virginia as the Charleston Battery take on the Virginia Beach Mariners. Kickoff is set for 8:00 pm ET.

Charleston Battery (4-15-6)

The defending champion Charleston Battery notched their first league win in over a month this past weekend when they defeated the Rochester Rhinos 5-1. With two ties prior to that, the Battery are on a three-game unbeaten streak for the first time since mid-May. Despite struggling in league play, the Battery are still alive in the US Open Cup, where they will take on the Chicago Fire in the semifinals.

Forward Greg Simmonds leads the team with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Midfielder Kevin Jackson earned A-League Team of the Week honors for notching a goal and an assist in the win against Rochester.

Virginia Beach Mariners (11-10-3)

The Mariners are in the midst of a tight playoff race as five teams are fighting for three remaining spots in the Eastern Conference (Montreal has already clinched one spot). Virginia Beach has won three straight matches, including a 3-1 decision over the Atlanta Silverbacks, another team in the playoff hunt.

Forward Dante Washington was this week's A-League Player of the Week after scoring two goals and adding an assist in the game against Atlanta. He leads the league with 36 points and is second in goals with 15. Teammate Carlos Garcia is at 17 points and his seven assists are also good for second in the A-League.

History

This is the third of four meetings this season between these two clubs. Each team has recorded a victory with the Battery earning a 4-3 decision back on May 11th, and the Mariners pulling even with a 2-0 win on June 22nd. Charleston lost the season series last year with a 1-2-1 record but topped the Mariners in the postseason 4-2 in their two-game aggregate score series, rallying with a 4-1 win after a 1-0 loss.
